Ink on paper. Japan, 19th cent. Kannon is the Buddhist Bodhisattva Avalokiteschvara, portrayed here as Ryuzu Kannon with a dragon. The goddess is wearing a flowing robe in front of a large full moon, or halo, and is standing on a impressively furious dragon with green eyes, large horns, barbels and heavy scaling. With her noble facial features, she is wearing considerable jewelry as well as a scarf on her chignon. Remarkable are the short brushstrokes used by the artists in contrast to the generous, flowing brushstrokes used for the looming storm clouds. In the bottom right-hand corner are a minuscule and illegible inscription and signature. The red seal reads TAKEYASU , another name of this artist who studied with the Kano and the Tosa schools and who was famous for his historical motifs. Very elegant mounting with partially gilded silk brocade, ivory rollers. Wooden box with the inscription “Picture of dragon and Kannon by Yosai”.
