Alexey Khudyakov Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1947 -

Alexey was born in Leningrad, where he grew up in a creative atmosphere. At a very young age he joined his father to paint scenes of Leningrad and its suburbs, the Crimean and the landscape around the river Volga.

He graduated honourably from Secondary Art School and went on to receive a distinction from the Institute of Painters, Sculptors and Architects (named after I. E. Repin) within the Art Academy. His tutor at the academy was the distinguished painter E. E. Moiseenko, whose work Alexey admired highly. Later he took a post-graduate course, joined the Art Union, taught at the Academy and continued producing his own work.

Alexey was a versatile painter who incorporated many genres and techniques in his work. He had a wide interest, from landscapes to intimate portraits and still lives, theatrical performances and heroic ballads.

His style changed over the years, starting with realistic romanticism, which evolved into a strong adherence to the rules of the academical school. After this, in a strong reaction to certain stagnations and political conflicts in the country, a combined explosion of genre, composition and style occurred. His works became saturated in colour, and different genres and expressions would come together in the space of a single canvas. An intense flow of colour and paradoxical compositions were brought to life.

Almost simultaneously, he started creating fragile, fresh, light and vivid works in which he combined portraits, landscapes and still lives. The painter adored the beauty and many-sidedness of the world, and he incorporated romance in all of his works.

Alexey passed away at the pinnacle of his artistic energy, though believing that his masterpiece still lay ahead of him, that it hadn’t yet been conceived.

Many of his works are kept in Russian museums and in private collections in America, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Canada, France, Finland, Israel, Portugal and The Netherlands.
