    FRANCIS SCOTT KEY

    FRANCIS SCOTT KEY (1779 - 1843) American lawyer and poet who, inspired by Americans' tenacity during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, wrote the lyrics to what was to become our national anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner". A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, Georgetown, Nov. 10, 1815, to Francis Saxton in New York, writing, in part: "I am unexpectedly disappointed in making sale of Wheaton's life estate in his house which I had directed the Marshall to take in Execution & which he had taken & advertized for Sale -- He had published as the day of Sale last Friday the 25th -- whereas Saturday was the 25th. In consequence of this mistake he will have to advertize it again for 30 days longer -- It shall then be sold, provided a reasonable price can be got for it - if not I shall buy it in for you ..." Addressed on verso in Key's hand. Usual folds, some marginal wear, else very good condition.

    KEY, FRANCIS SCOTT Manuscript account book, 51 leaves of which ca. 40 pages are written in ink (with a few in pencil), 8vo (6 1/2 x 3 3/4 in.; 165 x 95 mm), [Washington, D.C.], 1805-1807; edge staining on first and last leaves from binding, a few inkstains. Contemporary leather, gold-stamped supralibros on upper cover "F.S. Key", in a turquoise half-morocco slipcase; edges worn, upper joint cracked, numerous knife-slits on both covers.

    FRANCIS SCOTT KEY (1779 - 1843) American lawyer and poet who , inspired by Americans' tenacity during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, wrote they lyrics to what was to become our nation anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner". Scarce A.L.S. "Key & Logan " with integral address leaf, 1p. 4to., Georgetown, Mar. 21, 1823 to Roswell L. Colt in Baltimore. Legal content in which Ket advises his client that he has obtained a judgment against another party, and asks what his client will have him do with the judgment. He notes: "...Smith is largely indebted to the Gov't & that the debt of the U.S. would swallow up all the property, if the conveyance to his wife could be overthrown...if you choose to make an experiment with the execution, it should be done at once...the Marshal will require a bond from you to indemnify him for the seizure... ". Folds, else very good.  $800-1,200

FRANCIS SCOTT KEY (1779-1843) American lawyer and poet who, inspired by Americans' tenacity during the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, wrote they lyrics to what was to become our nation anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner". Scarce A.D.S. "F. S. Key", 2pp. legal folio, George Town, July 10, 1825. In part: "...Mr. English will lay before you an agreement, signed in behalf of all the Banks interested in the attachment cases against Capt. Marbury as Garnishee of Fitzhugh, except this Institution. The case has been carried up again to the Supreme Court, after one decision in our favor...Capt. Marbury consented to pay the different Banks...I was to receive 500$ in case of success & nothing if we failed..." Narrow, light dampstain in left margin, with three old archival tape repairs thereat three letters of text, else very good with a large, bold signature. $700-900
