    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Circle of Tilly Kettle, British 1735-1786- Portrait of Brodie of Brodie in military uniform; oil on canvas, 77 x 63.8 cm. Provenance: The Trustees of the late Stephen Mitchell, Esq. of Boquhan, Kippen, Stirlingshire sale, Christie's, London, 24 November 1933, lot 140 (as A. Ramsay).; Where purchased by Barbizon House [for £178 10s (170 gns)].; Private Collection, UK. Note: Brodie of Brodie is presented in full military regalia of a plum coloured coat, cream vest, yellow buff facings, and embroidered silver braiding. His uniform identifies him as belonging to one of the three battalions of the Madras European Regiment in the first years of the 1770s. For comparison, see the portrait of Colonel Daniel Frischmann-Heitz, who commanded a Swiss battalion of the Madras Europeans at Fort St George (see W.Y. Carman, ‘Indian Army Uniforms: Artillery, engineers and infantry’, 1969). The portrait of Frischman-Heitz is housed in the Historisches Museum in Basel, along with the Colonel’s surviving uniform. The only difference in Brodie’s uniform is the epaulette as opposed to an aiguillette, suggesting Brodie’s portrait was likely conceived slightly later, in 1771. See, also, the conversation piece ‘The Coffee Party’ which features Colonel Joseph Smith and Captain Tom Fitzgerald, both of the Madras European Regiment, and wearing the same uniform as the sitter in the present work (Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research, Vol XXXIX, p.64). Kettle worked in India in 1768-1776 and it is likely that the present portrait of Brodie was painted by an artist working in his circle. We are extremely grateful to Cristopher Bryant for his identification of the sitter’s military uniform and associated regiment. Please refer to department for condition report

Other Notes: In 1768, Kettle sailed to India with the British East India Company, landing at Madras (now Chennai), where he remained for two years. There, he painted Lord Pigot and Muhammad Ali Khan twice (once alone and once with five of his sons). He also painted non-portraits, including Dancing Girls (Blacks) in 1772 and a suttee scene in 1776 entitled, The ceremony of a gentoo woman taking leave of her relations and distributing her jewels prior to ascending the funeral pyre of her deceased husband. In 1770 Kettle painted a half-length portrait of 'Sir' Levett Hanson, a peripatetic writer on European knighthood and chivalry originally from Yorkshire. (The portrait is now in the collection of the Bury St Edmunds Manor House Museum.[1]) Kettle moved on to Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1771 and painted Shuja ud-Daula and Dancing-Girl Holding the Stem of a Hookah. In 1775, he painted George Bogle, Warren Hastings' emissary to Tibet, in Tibetan dress, presenting a ceremonial white scarf to Lobsang Palden Yeshe the 6th Panchen Lama. He also took an Indian mistress and had two daughters by her.

Provenance: By descent in the Willes family; Sotheby's, 24 November 1999, lot 52; Private collection Tilly Kettle - best-known for his Indian portraits - was a London born English artist who visited Ireland in the late 18th century. Kettle painted the face of architect James Gandon (1743-1823) c.1786-c.1796 in a large portrait in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.1783). The remainder of the picture was completed by William Cuming, an accomplished Irish artist, who depicted Gandon on the roof of the Parliament House (now the Bank of Ireland) in College Green, Dublin holding architectural plans, including those of the Four Courts. Kettle first entered the professional portrait arena in the 1750s following his studies with William Shipley in the Strand. He was the first prominent English portrait painter to operate in India. He first sailed there with the British East India Company in 1768 and painted several works in various parts of the country. In 1776 he returned to London and married, however imprudent financial decisions and a decline in clientele provoked a return to India in 1786. This journey was undertaken overland. His last recorded portrait was at Aleppo.
