    Est: -

Roy J W Kerswill (1925 - 2002) "Late Summer" Oil on Canvas. Roy was born in Devon, England. Roy served three years in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and saw much of the world. He was one of a four-man party from the U.K. that traveled to Canada in 1948 to carry out a three year adventure of North America. Two of the four continued their objective and reached the Yukon and Alaska. During his multiple trips throughout the U.S. they traveled the Columbia River across the U.S. border, down to Pasco, Washington, where they turned up the roaring Snake River towards Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He was best known for his paintings of the Tetons and Historical scenes depicting the settling of the West to include Native American Indians, Mountain Men and/or Pioneers. Roy participated in many art shows throughout his career, and was one of a handful of artists to be invited each year to the Wyoming Governor's Invitational Art Show, held at the Cheyenne Frontier Days - Old West Museum since its inception in 1981. Roy Kerswill Original "Plunder" Painting

    Est: $1,500 - $3,000

For your consideration is an original Roy Kerswill commissioned-painting, titled “Plunder”. Born in Devon, England, Roy was the eldest of four children. From an early age, his main interest was drawing and painting, which was recognized when he won a scholarship to the Bristol College of Art at age 11. Roy served three years in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and saw much of the world. To further his travel interests, Roy was one of a four-man party from the U.K. that traveled to Canada in 1948 to carry out a three year adventure of North America. In order to finance such travel, the four had to obtain casual employment along the way. Roy was one of the two in the foursome who secured such financially rewarding employment that they made the decision to leave the party and stay in North America. Roy took up residence in Jackson Hole, Wyoming during the summers and would travel the American southwest during the winters. This beautiful painting was commissioned by the consignor, with a request to capture the polarities in life and the contrast between light and dark. These requests can be seen throughout the piece in the color choice and the sun’s placement. The painting depicts a Native American woman trying on her haul after her brave husband went “shopping”. She is seen with a Victorian style mirror, hat, and shirt, along with multiple trade bead necklaces. The piece is signed on the lower left by the artist and has a brass title plate etched “Plunder” and signed by Roy Kerswill. The painting has been professionally framed and matted. The artwork measures 10 ½” x 13 ½” and the frame measures 19 ½” x 22 ½”.
