ROBERT KEMM (Salisbury, England, 1837 - London, 1895). "A Stop on the Road, with Granada in the Background". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 101 x 127 cm; 146 x 172 cm (frame). Son of the carver and gilder William Kemm, his interest in painting must have awakened very early, as at the age of only fourteen he is registered in the census as an artist. During his early years Kemm produced two series of 256 watercolours of Wiltshire churches. Following his contemporaries J. Phillip, J. Bagnold Burgess and E. Long, Kemm made a trip to Spain in the years between 1955 and 1955. Long, he made a trip to Spain between 1861 and 1864, visiting Seville and Granada in particular. In the years preceding his first exhibition, Kemm devoted himself mainly to portraiture. His first exhibition at the Royal Society of British Artists took place in 1874. In this first exhibition Kemm already displayed all the typical elements of his style, with works on Spanish themes. It is worth mentioning the presentation of several works by Kemm in the exhibition "English Romantic Painters in 19th century Spain", organised in Zamora by Caja Duero in 1999, from a private Spanish collection. Robert Kemm is represented in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Salisbury Museum, the Wiltshire Archaeological Society, Sunderland Museum and Sheffield Museum. During the 19th century, Spain and England maintained a special relationship. Britain's valuable support for patriotic fervour in the face of the French invaders led the Spanish to look sympathetically on the British. For their part, British painters and writers descended upon Spain, which offered them the quintessence of romantic idealism. Perhaps seeking a more authentic, natural landscape, they travelled to the peninsula, where the Industrial Revolution had not yet degraded the face of the landscape. Progress in communications made Spain an exotic yet nearby destination for the young English painters who rejected the industrial bourgeoisie and the poverty of spirit that was engulfing the ever-growing big cities. In fact, after the War of Independence, our country began to acquire an aura of exoticism and extravagance that attracted a good number of English intellectuals and artists. Moorish Andalusia, the bandit, the obscurantist Church, the handsome bullfighter and the maja, the lady in a mantilla, the barefoot children, the beggar in rags, Cervantes' gypsy girl... Paintings such as the one we present here bring us closer to the essence of Romanticism, to the exaltation of the soul as a response to an era that placed the cloth on the altar of Reason. To achieve this aim, Romantic painters ceased to subordinate colour to drawing, thus reproducing pictorial motifs with greater expressive force and greater naturalism. The brushstroke became more impetuous, the colour became more autonomous, the impasto was thicker, etc.

Robert Kemm (Salisbury, 1837-London, 1895) was an English romantic painter. Oil on canvas measures: 90 x 70 cm, measures with frame: 120 x 100 cm. Like other artists from his country such as John Phillip, Edwin Long or John Bagnold Burgess, he traveled to Spain around 1861 and developed a large part of his career in Andalusia, seeking inspiration in landscapes and scenes of manners such as The Baptism, with the departure of the church of majas and bullfighters, or the Galanteo in the fountain, both preserved in the Museum of Romanticism. He captured on canvas delicious figures of bullfighters, bandits, beggars, guitarists and different popular characters. Many of his works reflect the atmosphere of the city of Seville, such as the one titled The Spanish fruit seller (The Spanish fruit seller) in which a saleswoman is represented and in the background you can distinguish La Giralda (bell tower of the Cathedral of Seville). Like other artists from his country such as John Phillip, Edwin Long or John Bagnold Burgess, he traveled to Spain around 1861 and developed a large part of his career in Andalusia, seeking inspiration in landscapes and scenes of manners such as The Baptism, with the departure of the church of majas and bullfighters, or the Galanteo in the fountain, both preserved in the Museum of Romanticism. Robert Kemm fue un pintor inglés romántico que al igual que hicieron otros artistas contemporáneos de su país viajó a España hacia 1861 recorriendo principalmente Andalucía. Principalmente se inspiró en paisajes y escenas costumbristas del día a día en las que aparecen majas, toreros, bandoleros, mendigos, guitarristas y diferentes personajes populares en muchas ocasiones representando escenas galantes. Muchas de sus obras reflejan el ambiente de la ciudad de Sevilla. La obra que nos ocupa esta catalogación se trata de una de sus típicas escenas costumbristas con dos figuras femeninas vestidas con los ropajes típicos de la zona en esa época. En ella encontramos la calidad y coloridos típicos del autor durante su estancia en nuestro país.

Son of the carver and gilder William Kemm, his interest in painting must have awakened very early, as at the age of only fourteen he is registered in the census as an artist. During his early years Kemm produced two series of 256 watercolours of Wiltshire churches. Following his contemporaries J. Phillip, J. Bagnold Burgess and E. Long, Kemm made a trip to Spain in the years between 1955 and 1955. Long, he made a trip to Spain between 1861 and 1864, visiting Seville and Granada in particular. In the years preceding his first exhibition, Kemm devoted himself mainly to portraiture. His first exhibition at the Royal Society of British Artists took place in 1874. In this first exhibition Kemm already displayed all the typical elements of his style, with works on Spanish themes. It is worth mentioning the presentation of several works by Kemm in the exhibition "English Romantic Painters in 19th century Spain", organised in Zamora by Caja Duero in 1999, from a private Spanish collection. Robert Kemm is represented in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Salisbury Museum, the Wiltshire Archaeological Society, Sunderland Museum and Sheffield Museum. During the 19th century, Spain and England maintained a special relationship. Britain's valuable support for patriotic fervour in the face of the French invaders led the Spanish to look sympathetically on the British. For their part, British painters and writers descended upon Spain, which offered them the quintessence of romantic idealism. Perhaps seeking a more authentic, natural landscape, they travelled to the peninsula, where the Industrial Revolution had not yet degraded the face of the landscape. Progress in communications made Spain an exotic yet nearby destination for the young English painters who rejected the industrial bourgeoisie and the poverty of spirit that was engulfing the ever-growing big cities. In fact, after the War of Independence, our country began to acquire an aura of exoticism and extravagance that attracted a good number of English intellectuals and artists. Moorish Andalusia, the bandit, the obscurantist Church, the handsome bullfighter and the maja, the lady in a mantilla, the barefoot children, the beggar in rags, Cervantes' gypsy girl... Paintings such as the one we present here bring us closer to the essence of Romanticism, to the exaltation of the soul as a response to an era that placed the cloth on the altar of Reason. To achieve this aim, Romantic painters ceased to subordinate colour to drawing, thus reproducing pictorial motifs with greater expressive force and greater naturalism. The brushstroke became more impetuous, the colour became more autonomous, the impasto was thicker, etc.

Although in this composition the couple on the right-hand side of the scene stand out, interacting with each other without being involved in the main action of the work. In this way, the artist shows both his technical skill and his interest in depicting a realistic scene that reflects everyday life. In addition, he usually introduced architectural elements, as in the present case, in which the last plane is dominated by a church bell tower. The protagonists of the scene are both carrying instruments, a guitar and a tambourine, which indicates that they are probably part of an itinerant company, thus representing bohemian life. In the years preceding his first exhibition, Kemm devoted himself mainly to portraiture. His first exhibition at the Royal Society of British Artists took place in 1874. In this first exhibition Kemm already showed all the typical elements of his style, with works on Spanish themes. It is worth mentioning the presentation of several works by Kemm in the exhibition "English Romantic Painters in 19th Century Spain", organized in Zamora by Caja Duero in 1999, from a private Spanish collection. Robert Kemm is represented in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Salisbury Museum, the Wiltshire Archaeological Society, the Sunderland Museum and the Museum of Sheffield, as well as in several important private collections.

Measurements: 101 x 127 cm; 146 x 172 cm (frame). Son of the carver and gilder William Kemm, his fondness for painting must have awakened very early, since with only fourteen years he appears registered in the census as an artist. During his early years Kemm produced two series of 256 watercolors of Wiltshire churches. Following his contemporaries J. Phillip, J. Bagnold Burgess and E. During the 19th century, Spain and England maintained a special relationship. The valuable support given by Great Britain to the patriotic fervor against the French invader, led the Spanish to look with sympathy to the British. For their part, British painters and literati descended upon Spain, a country that offered them the quintessence of romantic idealism. Perhaps looking for a natural and more authentic landscape, they traveled to the peninsula, where the Industrial Revolution had not yet degraded the face of the landscape. Progress in communications made Spain an exotic, but at the same time close, destination for young English painters who rejected the industrial bourgeoisie and the poverty of spirit that was plaguing the large and ever-growing cities. In fact, after the War of Independence our country began to acquire an aura of exoticism and extravagance that attracted a good number of English intellectuals and artists. The Moorish Andalusia, the bandit, the obscurantist Church, the handsome bullfighter and the maja, the lady with mantilla, the barefoot children, the beggar full of rags, Cervantes' gitanilla... Paintings like the one we present here bring us closer to the essence of romanticism, to the exaltation of the soul as a response to an era that placed the cloth on the altar of Reason. To achieve this goal, Romantic painters stopped subordinating color to drawing, thus reproducing pictorial motifs with more expressive force and greater naturalism. The brushstroke becomes impetuous, the color reaches its autonomy, the impasto is thicker, etc.
