The Handmade Papers of Japan, 4 vol., photographic frontispieces, numerous illustrations, facsimiles and reproductions, many examples of paper bound or tipped in, numerous hand-coloured prints, vol. 4 with 20 leaves of watermarks, colour block-printed endpapers, vol.1-3 in original decorative block-printed wrappers sewn in the Japanese style, printed paper labels, silk caps at spine ends, vol.4 in portfolio of matching design with ivory clasps, together with an envelope containing 5 samples of fibres, housed in russet cloth portfolio-style box with ivory clasps, printed label on upper cover, margins slightly browned, folio, Rutland and Tokyo, Charles E. Tuttle Co., 1952. *** A rare and important work on paper, this is one of the finest studies of Japanese papermaking, brimming with specimens, including old and rare documented papers from the eighth and ninth centuries. Volume I contains a history and description of Japanese papermaking, illustrated with photographs of a papermaking village and a hand-coloured facsimile of the earliest Japanese illustrated work on papermaking (with an English translation). Volume II contains 187 specimens from the Nara period (710-793) to the present day. Volume III contains the Contemporary Collection of 139 full-page specimens from twenty districts, with descriptions. Volume IV is the Watermark Collection, with twenty exquisite and complex pictorial light-and-shade watermarks, made by a hand-rubbing process unknown in the West.
