Margaret Keane Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1927 -

Many born in the late 1950s and 1960s grew up under the sad, soulful big-eyed images of artist Margret Keane's popular art. Yet, the middle class purchasers displaying her paintings on suburban walls never knew the true artist. Her husband, Walter Keane, sold the kitsch paintings as his, making millions. She divorced him in 1965, eventually confessing the ruse, but Walter claimed she was a liar. In the mid-1980s, she won a defamation lawsuit when a judge proposed each produce a painting in court. Walter refused.

The life of artist Margaret Keane was made into a Tim Burton film in 2014 entitled Big Eyes. Though she has never gained favor in the world of art critics, she continues to paint. Margaret Keane's paintings and art for sale still feature subjects with big eyes, but her more recent art exudes joyfulness. Peruse vintage and contemporary paintings online to find a piece that expresses powerful emotion.

              MARGARET KEANE ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING

              Est: $20,000 - $30,000

MARGARET KEANE ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING (1927 – 2022) American artist known for her paintings of subjects with large 'doe' eyes. She mainly painted women, children, or animals in oil or mixed media. Her work achieved huge commercial success, largely through reproductions on prints, plates, and cups. It has been critically acclaimed but also criticized as formulaic. The artwork was originally attributed to Keane's then-husband, Walter Keane. Soon after their divorce in the 1960s, Margaret claimed credit, which was established after a court 'paint-off' in Hawaii. An original Margaret Keane oil on canvas painting depicting a young girl with a kitten cradled in her arms, 13.5 x 29.5 in. (sight), signed 'Keane' at the lower-left corner. In original (worn) partly gilded frame. Very slight surface cracking in places commensurate with age, some staining to the young lady's right sleeve and in need of a bit of cleaning, the inside edge of the frame damp stained and slightly so on the verso with no apparent effect to the painting itself, overall, very good condition.

Margaret D. H. Keane (American, 1927 – 2022) 'Girl with Unicorns' Signed 89/300 lithograph with COA depicting a girl sitting next to a pair of unicorns. Known for her paintings of subjects with big eyes. She mainly painted women, children, or animals in oil or mixed media. The work achieved commercial success through inexpensive reproductions on prints, plates, and cups. It has been critically acclaimed but also criticized as formulaic and cliché. The artwork was originally attributed to Keane's ex-husband, Walter Keane. After their divorce in the 1960s, Margaret soon claimed credit, which was established after a court "paint-off" in Hawaii.
