Edward McKnight Kauffer Sold at Auction Prices

Illustrator, Wood cutter, b. 1890 - d. 1954

Edward McKnight Kauffer (14 December 1890 – 22 October 1954) was an American artist and graphic designer who lived for much of his life in the United Kingdom. He worked mainly in poster art, but was also active as a painter, book illustrator and theatre designer.

Edward Leland Kauffer was born on 14 December 1890, in Great Falls, Montana.[3] By 1910 he had moved to San Francisco working as a bookseller and studying art at the California School of Design from 1910 to 1912.[4] At around this time Professor Joseph McKnight of the University of Utah became aware of Kauffer's work, sponsored him and paid to send him to Paris for further study. In gratitude Kauffer took his sponsor's name as a middle name.

Kauffer stopped in Chicago for six months in 1912/1913 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. While there he witnessed the Armory Show, one of the first major exhibitions to introduce the styles of modernism to American viewers. This likely had a major impact on Kauffer, who would work in many of the same styles throughout his career. He arrived in Paris in 1913 and studied at the Académie Moderne until 1914.

In Paris in 1923 he met the textile designer Marion Dorn (1896–1964), and subsequently lived with her in London, from late 1923 to July 1940. They married in 1950 and moved to New York until his death in 1954.
Blue plaque erected in 2015 by English Heritage at Swan Court, Chelsea Manor Street, Chelsea, London SW3 5RY, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Kauffer moved to London upon the start of the First World War, and remained there for most of his career. He was briefly associated with Robert Bevan's Cumberland Market Group and had a one-man show at the Omega Workshops. In Brighton on the south coast, he designed a "novel" mural for the lobby of Embassy Court, a Modernist block of flats designed by Wells Coates in 1935. The mural consisted of "monochrome photographs ... printed directly on to a light-sensitive cellulose coating".

Kauffer may be best known for the 140 posters that he produced for London Underground, and later London Transport. The posters span many styles: many show abstract influences, including futurism, cubism, and vorticism; others evoke impressionist influences such as Japanese woodcuts.

He created posters for Shell Oil, the Great Western Railway and other commercial clients, and also illustrated books and book covers. Later he also became interested in textiles,[10] interior design and theatrical design.

He returned to New York City in 1940 at the beginning of the Second World War, and tried to find work in advertising. He struggled in the more competitive atmosphere until he was approached to do a series of posters for American Airlines in 1947. American Airlines remained his primary client until his death in 1954.

EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) SUBWAY POSTERS PERFORM. 1947. 45¼x29¾ inches, 115x75½ cm. Condition B: creases and extensive repaired tears in margins and image; repaired pin holes in corners. Returning to America in 1939, Kauffer spent the war years working primarily on institutional commissions. When the New York Subways Advertising Company launched a new campaign in 1947, Kauffer was among the established artists chosen to contribute designs. The artists involved in the project were the most prominent practitioners of the craft ever assembled, many of whom had immigrated from Europe, and included Erik Nitsche, Otis Shepard, Joseph Binder, Jean Carlu, Herbert Bayer, Paul Rand, Lester Beall, Sascha Maurer and Lucian Bernhard. Kauffer contributed two dramatically different posters to the project. One, Subway Posters Pull, is geometrically-inspired; the soft, humorous style he employs here is in the same vein as a poster he had just created for the Barnum & Bailey Circus. This funny and eye-catching image was awarded the Art Director's Club Prize. Kauffer 317, International Poster Annual 1948-1949 p. 163, Kauffer 317, IPA 48-49 no. 341.

ARTIST: E. MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) SIZE: 28 1/4 x 41 3/4 in./71.8 x 106 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Although born in Montana, McKnight Kauffer spent most of his creative years in England. He returned stateside for the last fifteen years of his life, and designed posters in a New York studio, where his biggest clients were book publishers—Random House, Hartcourt Brace, Alfred A. Knopf, Doubleday, Pantheon, and Modern Library—as well as American Airlines. “His color harmonies, his arrangements of pattern, his sensitivity in the development of an appropriate image or symbol... and his mastery of execution have seldom been equaled” (Catalogue of McKnight Kauffer exhibition, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, 1989-1990). In his poster for Pan Am’s service to Germany, he dispenses with the mode of transportation altogether, opting instead to showcase the perennial beauty of Germany, even in the recent postwar years. EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) SOARING TO SUCCESS! DAILY HERALD - THE EARLY BIRD. Circa 1973. 30x15¼ inches, 76¼x38¾ cm. UDO Ltd., London. Condition A- / B+: time-staining, minor foxing and creases in bottom image and text. Paper. Although he was born in America, McKnight Kauffer spent his most creative years in Great Britain, acting as the "Chef de file" of the new generation of poster artists. After his groundbreaking poster design for the Daily Herald was published in 1919 (based on his seminal work Flight), he received commissions from many major clients, the most important being London Transport, for which he designed 141 posters over a span of 20 years. "His 1919 poster, Flight, alluded to Vorticism, a British movement influenced by Cubism and Futurism that leaned toward machine-like forms - by Kauffer's reckoning 'the first and only Cubist poster design in England'" (Aiga.org). This version of Daily Herald is a smaller, posthumous version, likely published in 1973 to correspond with a traveling Kauffer exhibit developed by the V&A. Rare. V&A E.35-1973, Kauffer 9, Affiche Art Deco p. 150, Modern Poster 81 (var), Avant Garde p. 68 (var), Poster Purpose p. 165 (var), Weill 401 (var), Cooper Hewitt 1963-39-1229.

In 1928 Jack Boddington was appointed Publicity Manager of Shell, becoming Director of Publicity for Shell Mex-B.P. in 1932 when the two companies decided to merge their distribution in the U.K. Like Frank Pick (the London Underground) and Stephen Tallents (The Empire Marketing Board), Boddington would elevate Shell's advertising campaigns to a superior level of quality. Kauffer, who became one of his close friends, was regularly commissioned to design posters for the oil company. For this striking, symbolic, graphic allegory Kauffer combines photography and typography, organizing the image around an inclined rectangle, delineated by the brand name and its qualities, against a black background. An electric flash of lightning cuts the poster in half, symbolizing the power the fluid has on engines, while a photo integrated on the right shows a statue of a rearing horse to literally evoke the "horse power." In this stylized image created in 1953 for American Airlines by Edward McKnight Kauffer we see the elements of patriotism that are synonymous with Boston. The American flag along with the image of the Revolutionary Soldier remind the viewer of some of the history of the City of Boston and they serve to promote travel by American Airlines to get there. American Airlines is a major airline based in Fort Worth, Texas. The company was founded in 1926 as a union of more than eighty small airlines and is the world's largest airline. American Airlines is a founding member of Oneworld Alliance, the largest airline alliance in the world. Through this partnership they are able to coordinate fares and services with Airlines around the world. In 2001, they acquired the well-known Trans World Airlines (TWA). They still operate today out of ten major hubs in the United States. Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) studied painting at the California School of Design before moving on to Paris, at the behest of his benefactor, Joseph McKnight. He attended the Armory Show in Chicago, which had a major influence on his artwork. At the start of World War I, Kauffer moved to England where he produced over 140 posters for the London Underground. His poster designs are known for their versatility in style and technique including futurism, cubism, and vorticism. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This design became very well known when it was used to launch the Labour newspaper The Daily Herald on 31 March 1919.
