Carl (1865) Kauba Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1865 - d. 1922

Artist Carl Kauba is considered one of the greatest depictors of the Old West. Carl Kauba sculptures capture the adventure and essence of the American West. Born the son of an Austrian shoe cobbler in 1865, Kauba was inspired as a boy by the Wild West adventure stories he read and began collecting historical photographs and artifacts from that time. He found his passion sculpting bronze after studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Known for their portrayal of Native Americans, cowboys, and calvary, Carl Kauba sculptures are rich with detail right down to the reins, weapons, and headdresses.

Kauba is also well known for his Naughties, a vintage series of mechanical, avant-garde sculptures. Find Carl Kauba bronze sculptures for sale alongside other rare bronze sculptures at Invaluable

CARL KAUBA (Vienna, 1865- 1922). "Nude young woman on bearskin", ca. 1900. Patinated bronze. Signed on one side. It does not retain the garment (which would be opened by hinges and cover the body of the young woman). Presents some lack. Measurements: 12,5 x 21 x 9,5 cm. Carl Kauba studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Vienna with professor Laufenberg. Later he would study in the academies with Carl Waschmann and Stefan Schwartz and in Paris in 1886 to extend his studies. Kauba's fascination with the West was fueled by the stories of German writer Carl May, whose tales of Western adventures were known throughout Europe. It has been suggested that Kauba traveled to the American West when he was in his early twenties, and possibly returned to Austria with voluminous notes, sketches, and several models of Western sculptures. The polychrome finish, intricate details, and realistic forms make Kauba's sculptures excellent examples of turn-of-the-century Viennese bronzes. Most were cast for the American market between 1895 and 1912 and were widely advertised and sold by Latendorfer in New York during the 1950s.
