    HANS KANTERS (1947)

    Est: €10,000 - €20,000

"De Reddende Engel" (2008) Signed upper right Signed, titled and annotated XXX (for Amsterdam) on the stretcher Oil on canvas, 120.4 x 100.1 cm Provenance: Acquired from the artist by the present owner Note: Dutch self-taught artist Hans Kanters, who achieved success in the early 1970s with his fantastical paintings, has been captivating audiences with his 'Surrealist Theatre' for over fifty years. Unconstrained by trends, traditions, or dogmas, Kanters carved his own path from the outset. In 1982, he created a study for Saving Angel but was unable to realize the painting on a large canvas due to the small size of his studio. Despite this, the motif became archetypal for Kanters’ later work. Finally, in 2008, after moving into a larger studio, he was able to paint Saving Angel on this monumental scale. Reflecting on his art, Kanters remarked: “People must be able to get more out of it than I put into it; otherwise, I have failed. It’s not just about the meaning - it’s also about the feeling, the humor and irony, the tenderness and frustration, even the anger that I try to convey.” * Condition report available upon request

    Dec. 16, 2024

    HANS KANTERS (1947)

    Est: €1,000 - €2,000

Nachtkijker (2022) Signed lower left Oil on panel, 11.2 x 10.8 cm Provenance: Acquired from the artist by the present owner Note: Kanters’ work is defined by dreamlike landscapes, visions, and delusions - scenes that are implausible yet somehow convincing. Metamorphosis is a recurring theme: people transform into animals, animals into objects, and objects back into people. This fluidity reflects Kanters' guiding principle: “The artist celebrates freedom.” * Condition report available upon request

    Jun. 25, 2024

    Hans Kanters (1947)

    Est: €2,000 - €4,000

De Passant (1974) Signed and dated 74 upper right Oil on canvas, 35.5 x 40.3 cm Provenance: - Galerie Siau, Amsterdam, 1975 - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: The surrealistic artist Hans Kanters amazes the audience with his dream landscapes filled with fantastic creatures, painted with great precision and craftsmanship. As an autodidact, Kanters has been following his own path with his own unique style at an amazingly skilled technical level. The fascinating paintings with a lot of details depict life in all its facets of emotion, behaviour, and social customs. As you can see from this painting, Kanter’s surrealist universe is rich with all kinds of motifs, such as the erotic motif. While painting, Kanters discovered the shapes the genitals could assume: the comical and symbolic ones as well as the erotic ones. Upright or reclining, they willingly pose for him, sometimes as critical elements, derision, impotence, and provocations. “People ought to be able to get more out of it than I put into it, otherwise I have been doing something wrong. It is not just about the meaning, it is the emotion, humour and irony, tenderness and frustration, even rage, that I am trying to convey.” - Hans Kanters

  • Kanters, Hans: Der Despot
    Dec. 03, 2022

    Kanters, Hans: Der Despot

    Est: €800 - €1,200

Der Despot -- Öl auf runder Holzplatte. 1974. -- Durchmesser 31,5 cm. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Surreale Szene -- Öl auf Holzplatte. 1972. -- 13,3 x 16,2 cm. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
