    KANO HOGAI (1828-1888) Daruma Meiji era (1868-1912), 1880s Kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink and slight colours on paper in silk mounts, depicting an imposing giant figure of Daruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, with seals Ka, no, Tadamichi no in (seal of Tadamichi); with a plain wood storage box. Overall: 263cm x 159.5cm (103½in x 62¾in); image: 224cm x 128cm (88¼in x 50 3/8in).

    KANO HOGAI (1828~1888) "Two Sovereigns and Three Emperors", Japanese painting scroll Kano Hogai ?? ?? (1828~1888) ? Hogai was born in Chofu-cho, Yamaguchi as a son of Kano Seiko. His talent was obvious when he was little. In 1846 when he was 19 years old, Hogai became the pupil of Kano family of Kobiki-cho and learned the way of painting from Kano Shosenin Tadanobu. He was given the name "Shokai Gado" from Shosenin Tadanobu. At the same day Hogai became the pupil, Hashimoto Gaho also became the pupil as well. And they became the best friends for the rest of their life. Both Gaho and Hogai made a conspicuous figure in young in each way of paintings, and they were called "Shosenin no Nishinzoku / God's legs of Shosenin". Meeting with Ernest Fenollosa in 1884 influenced his painting very much. His last painting "HIBO KANNON" is Important Cultural Properties of Japan. His pseudonym Hogai, Shorin, Korin, etc... Primary Material = Paper. Technique = Hand-painted. Roller Ends = Wood; Condition = Refer to all pictures, there are stains and wrinkles overall. Size of the scroll: 42 cm x 103 cm = 16.5" x 40.5” inches

    狩野 芳崖 KANO HOGAI (1828~1888) “3 Sovereigns and 5 Emperors", Japanese painting scroll The Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors were a group of mythological rulers or deities in ancient northern China who in later history have been assigned dates in a period from circa 2852 BC to 2070 BC. Today they are considered culture heroes. The dates of these mythological figures may be fictitious, but according to some accounts and reconstructions, they preceded the Xia Dynasty (which itself is prehistoric, without writing, and which is likewise also documented only in much later written sources).
