  • FRANCIS KALURAQ (KALLOOAR) (1931-1990), BAKER LAKE
    Nov. 13, 2011

FRANCIS KALURAQ (KALLOOAR) (1931-1990), BAKER LAKE

    Est: $18,000 - $22,000

Figure with four faces, ca. mid 1960s, black stone, signed in syllabics, 9 x 4.5 x 2.75 in, 22.5 x 11.5 x 7 cm Francis Kaluraq was one of the first Baker Lake sculptors singled out for special attention in the early 1960s. Works by him (including a massive, blocky "Hunter" with raised fishing spear that is like a Baker Lake version of Akkeeaktashuk's harpoon hunters) were illustrated in both Swinton books, in "Sculpture/Inuit," and other publications. Despite his reputation in southern Canada, Kaluraq was never prolific, and actually switched to printmaking. He participated in experimental linocut workshops in 1965, then worked as a printmaker at the Sanavik Co-op between 1969 and 1976, translating drawings by Anguhadluq, Oonark and others into stonecuts. Although the angularity of the body and Kaluraq's trademark facial features are clearly typical of his style, this remarkable, mysterious figure is probably unique in the artist's oeuvre.
