"He set up his own sculptures. He was doing small ceramics, which were very ingenious and elegant and he did some jewelry. ... Everything he did had an elegant touch, but not precious, a strong sense of design." After two years at Carnegie Tech, he received a fellowship to the famed Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield, Mich., where he was a student of and assistant to world-renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles. "[Mr. Kalla] was a major artist that people didn't know about," said his friend,Barry Colfelt, former Pittsburgh Cultural Trust communications director, now public relations director for The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. " I don't think he was as fully appreciated as he should have been [as an artist], but people who know sculpture know him. His work is in a lot of private collections around the country." 36"H x 3"W (sight), 41 1/2"H x 36"W (frame)
