BIOGRAPHY: Kalay graduated from the Commercial Lycee in Istanbul, a teacher named Faruk Morel influencing him to develop an interest in an. After high school he went on to the Higher Commercial School, and it was at this time that he met Seref Akdik. From 1954-57 be audited at the Academy of Fine Arts and made the acquaintance of the celebrated and famous. Kalay's career in an dates from 1958, when he had a painting displayed at the Union of Fine Arts Exhibition in Ankara, and in 1959 he held his first one- man show in Istanbul. He worked at various jobs, but in 1969 became a full-time professional painter. He had a number of oneman shows, and participated in numerous collective exhibitions at home and abroad.Kalay gained a grasp of drawing fundamentals by working with Seref Akdik, and also studied under Hasan Vecih Beneketoglu and Hikmet Onat. He had an impressionistic style, but for a time painted in an expressionistic vein. Landscapes were his fane, although he also treated such subjects as exile, peasant women and the regional architecture of dwellings. He was stirred by the Anatolian steppe, and in his canvasses used pastel colors as well as varying shades of gray.
