    DAVID KAKABADZE (GEORGIAN 1889-1952) Lost Paradise (A Study for a Film Frame), 1935 watercolour, India ink, pencil and gouache on paper 24.5 x 30.8 cm (9 5/8 x 12 1/8 in.) signed by the artist, director, cameraman, with a control stamp and additional inscriptions in Georgian LOT NOTES Davit (David) Kakabadze was an important Georgian avant-garde painter and graphic artist. Born into a peasant family in the village of Kukhi (near Khoni, Georgia), Kakabdze was supported by local philantropists and went to study natural sciences at St. Petersburg University, from where he graduated in 1916. While in St. Petersburg, he studied painting with Dmitroyev-Kavkazy. From 1919 to 1927, Kakabaze live and worked in Paris, where he participated in joint exhibitions with Lado Gudiashvili and Shalva Kikodze. He also participated in the Societe des Artistes Independants exhibitions while in Paris. Returning to Georgia in 1927, Kakabadze began collaborating with the leading Georgian theater director Kote Marjanishivili, for whom he produced set designs for Marjanishvili's theatre in Kutsai. Kakabadze became a professor at the Tbilisi State Academy of the Arts in 1928. A formalist and avant-gardist until the end, Kakabadze never fully adopted the offical art of Socialist Realism espoused by the authorities, and was dismissed from the Academy in 1948.

    KAKABADZE, DAVID (1889-1952), Landscape of Imereti with a Red Road, signed and dated 1918. Oil on canvas, laid on cardboard, 31 by 41.5 cm (cardboard size). The larger canvas The View of Imereti from the same year is currently in the collection of the Kakabadze family. Provenance: A gift from the artist to his colleague and friend from the Marjanishvili Theatre, Tbilisi, c. 1930s–1940s. Acquired from the above by the family of the present owner in 1987. Thence by descent. Private collection, Europe. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by Eter Andronikashvili-Kakabadze, the artist’s widow (inscription on the backing board). Authenticity has also been confirmed by Amir Kakabadze, the artist’s son (inscription on the reverse). Authenticity certificate from Eter Andronikashvili and Mariam Kakabadze.
