        Est: $1,200 - $1,800

FRITZ KAHN (1888-1968) DER MENSCH ALS INDUSTRIEPALAST. 1926. 37¼x18½ inches, 94½x47 cm. Fricke & Co., Stuttgart. Condition A / A-: minor creases along vertical and horizontal folds; pencil notations in top left corner. Paper. Framed. Dr. Fritz Kahn was an Orthodox Jewish gynecologist in Berlin, who published popular illustrated books including The Cell and The Jews as a Race and Cultural People. In his books and articles, he "visualized the structure and function of the human body in a very unique way." (fritz-kahn.com). This poster of The Human as Industrial Palace is exemplary of one of his conceptual designs, presenting a playful but instructive comparison between industrialism and anatomy, and elevating the traditional medical diagram into 20th century graphic design. When the Nazis took power, Kahn's books were banned and publicly burned, and Kahn left Germany for Palestine and then the U.S., with the help of his friend Albert Einstein. While some of his works were translated into English, without the resources to produce new books, Kahn fell into obscurity. His innovative designs were still influential to future artists, and the first exhibition of his works, Fritz Kahn - Maschine Mensch, opened in Berlin in 2010 and featured this mechanical image.

Fritz Kahn (1888-1968) THE HUMAN FACTORY. 1931

        Est: £2,000 - £3,000

[KAHN, Fritz (1888-1968)]. The Human Factory: Sketch of the Chemical Functions of the Body. Stuttgart: Fricke & Co., [1931]. Rare English language version of a famous anatomical-industrial poster by a pioneer of infographics. Fritz Kahn’s magnum opus, Das Leben des Menschen, a five volume journey through the human body which illustrates biological processes using their mechanical equivalents, was published between 1922-1931 and included as a supplement the original German language version of the poster, entitled ‘Der Mensch als Industriepalast’. We are aware of only a single copy of this English language version in institutional holdings, at the Wellcome Library, London. The Wellcome copy differs from the present copy in being backed onto linen and folded between wrappers, by the presence of an accompanying booklet not included here, and by the addition of an overslip at the imprint giving the publisher as ‘George Philip & Son, Ltd’. Chromolithographic poster (991 x 500mm). (Closed tears to upper and lower portions and blank area, these skilfully repaired and the whole backed onto archival paper, faint stains around head and nose.)

KAHN, FRITZ. 1888-1968. Das Leben des Menschen. Stuttgart: Frankh'sche Verlagshandlung, 1923-1931. 5 volumes. Small 4to. Numerous illustrations in text, large color lithographic poster in rear pocket of volume 5, 3-D "glasses" in rear pocket of volume 5, various publisher's blow-ins loosely inserted. Quarter blue cloth and boards, volumes 2 and 4 with pictorial dust jackets, each volume with original card carton with paper spine label. A few chips to jacket of volume 4, some spotting and yellowing.INCLUDES KAHN'S ICONIC COLOR POSTER DER MENSCH ALS INDUSTRIEPALAST.Filled with images that reflected the varying stylistic influences of the Weimar era, Kahn's book was published in these 5 volumes over a period of years. Work on the illustrations began as early as 1912, and poster depicting the body as a "human factory" was reprinted and widely distributed throughout Germany, even after the books were banned by the Nazi regime and Kahn forced to flee the country. The first state of the poster, as it appears here, was originally published as a supplement to volume 3 in 1926, and provided with a convenient pocket to insert it into at the back of volume 5. It was reprinted in 1931 in a second state (with the man at upper left standing in the center of the control panel, rather than to the left of it). FRITZ KAHN (1888-1968) DER MENSCH ALS INDUSTRIEPALAST. 1926. 38 1/2x19 1/2 inches, 97 3/4x49 1/2 cm. Fricke & Co., Stuttgart. Condition B+: minor tears along sharp vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. Dr. Fritz Kahn was an Orthodox Jewish gynecologist in Berlin, who published popular illustrated books like Die Zelle (The Cell) and Die Juden als Rasse und Kulturvolk (The Jews as a Race and Cultural People). In his books and articles, he "visualized the structure and function of the human body in a very unique way. His magnum opus Das Leben des Menschen (The Life of Man, 1922-1931) fascinated laymen as well as scientists with its visual analogies and metaphors and their unusually expressive and contemporary design" (http://www.fritz-kahn.com). For the illustrations of this five-volume set, Kahn supervised the publisher's designers as they created the more traditional illustrations, while "for more complex images, Kahn commissioned freelance painters, architects, and graphic designers who implemented his ideas in their own styles" (Ibid).

KAHN, Fritz (1888-1968). Der Mensch als Industriepalast. Stuttgart: Fricke & Co., [1926]. Color lithograph poster, 38½ x 19 inches. (With archival backing, a few minor areas of color rubbed where originally folded.) As a gynecologist in Berlin, Fritz Kahn became involved with writing and illustrating articles on popular science. One of his most well-known works, Das Leben des Menschen, a five volume work on the human body, was published between 1922 and 1932. In this poster he depicts the human body as a factory. Shortly before Hitler came on power in 1933, Fritz Kahn traveled to Palestine. Because of the political situation in Germany, he settled in Jerusalem. In 1939, Fritz Kahn left Palestine for France and Portugal before he was able to immigrate to the United States early in 1941 with the help of humanitarians Varian Fry and Albert Einstein. Following his arrival in New York, Fritz Kahn was not only able to continue his career as a writer and illustrator, but was viewed as one of the world's foremost popular writers on medical and biological subjects. Several of his publications were widely translated. He lectured and appeared on radio broadcasts where he discussed medical and popular scientific questions. The function of the human body was a common topic in most of Fritz Kahn's writings, including such best-selling illustrated works as Our Sex Life (1939), Man in Structure and Function (1943), and The Human Body (1966). Sappol, Dream Anatomy, pp. 58-59.
