Béla Kádár Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1877 - d. 1956

(b Budapest, Hungary, 1877; d Budapest, Hungary 1956) Hungarian Painter. Béla Kádár began his study in 1896, attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and won the Kohner prize in 1910. His early works, exhibited in 1918, showed a strong influence of Secessionists and Post-impressionists. In 1923, he was invited to show his painting in a group exhibition in Berlin at the invitation of Herwath Walden, an important figure in the German avant-garde. The exhibition brought much needed attention to European avant-garde artists when it traveled to New York. With the help from Walden, Kádár’s major exhibition was planned for the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 1928. Kádár distinguished himself as a modern painter; his paintings often combined themes from Hungarian folklore and peasant life with the artistic styles of early 20th century, including expressionism, constructivism and cubo-futurism.

In 1923, he had his first soslo exhibition at Herwarth Walden's gallery "Der Sturm", followed by exhibitions with Schreiber and Lothar Schreyer. His paintings were published in Walden's art magazine"Der Sturm". in Berlin, he tranformed his drawing style from distinctive expression to a romantic one, inspired by German Expressionists and particularley the Blue Rider group. (Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc) Kadar also incorporated elements from other contemporary art movements: Cubism, Futurism, Neo-Primitivism, Constructivism (Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Willi Baumeister, Gottfried Honegger), and Metaphysical painting (Pittura metafisica-Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carra, Giorgio Morandi). In the 1920s and 1930s, he exhibited in Budapest, Berlin, Philadelphia, and through the mediation of Katherine Dreier, in the Brooklyn Museum in New York. In Kadar's independent work, rural life form his homeland is poetically interwined with its diverse folklore details and Chassidic faith-in the scenic elements, color harmonies, and line work. Béla Kádár Budapest 1877 - 1956 Budapest Musician Tempera on panel 68 x 43.5 cm Signed lower right The Hungarian painter and draughtsman Béla Kádár is considered one of the most important visual artists of the avant-garde of the 20th century. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and travelled to France and Germany, eventually moving to Berlin, where he presented his works for the first time in a solo exhibition in 1923. His paintings combine elements of German Expressionism, Constructivism, Cubism, and Primitivism, among others. Kádár often depicted female musicians as nudes, especially a pair of people as in this painting. It shows a girl with a guitar in an abstract pictorial space, which is given spatiality by the table with still life and the veil-like cloth draped over the armchair. The smaller figure in profile in the foreground only steps halfway into the pictorial space and presents the viewer with a bright red apple. Is this possibly a small putto who, although depicted without facial features, is listening to the guitarist's playing? The musician appears to be completely absorbed in her playing, as the gentle position of the instrument on her shoulder and the downturned head in profile reveal. Her almond-shaped eye gazes enraptured forwards; she takes no notice of the viewers. This emotionally charged, poetic work reveals details of Hungarian folklore, oscillating between cubist abstraction and primitivist figuration, and thus achieves an extraordinary aesthetic effect.
