        • Sunday doll by Handwerck, Germany, around 1900
          May. 17, 2013

Sunday doll by Handwerck, Germany, around 1900

          Est: €550 - €700

Porcelain, human hair, composition body Germany, around 1900 Manufacturer: Heinrich Handwerck Bisque swivel head Beautiful blue eyes Original long hair wig Original outer- and underwear Height: 64 cm This pretty face, with its rosy cheeks, blue eyes, delicately painted eyelashes and brows and an open mouth with cast on teeth, melt every collector's heart. The face is framed with gorgeous curls adorned with pink flowers and bows. The little girl was dressed in lace-trimmed panties, a batiste chemise and an underdress with a wide lace braid. Thereto oil cloth shoes and white socks. Since this is a particularly charming doll her former owner was only allowed to play with her on Sundays. The doll head is in good condition. It was examined with a torch, there are no flaws. The neck is marked "Germany" and "12", under the wig "DEP". There are two production holes on the back of the head. The ears are pierced. The ball-jointed body is in fair condition according to its age. It shows material loss on the heels and knees as well as small fissures and colour loss. There are some colour repairs around the neck and joints. The clothes show the usual signs of age and use. The panties are porous, one shoe is damaged. The doll measures 64 cm in height. Heinrich Handwerck Heinrich Handwerck started producing dolls in 1876. The bisque doll heads were designed by Handwerck and manufactured by Simon & Halbig. In 1902 the company was taken over by Kämmer & Reinhardt. The most well-known model is probably the bébé doll.

        • Rare "Bottle Baby" by Louis Amberg, Germany, 1914
          May. 17, 2013

Rare "Bottle Baby" by Louis Amberg, Germany, 1914

          Est: €450 - €600

Porcelain, rubber, textile Germany, 1914 Manufacturer: Louis Amberg & Son Blue sleep eyes Jeno Juszko (1880-1954) - American sculptor Height: 42 cm This baby doll is based on a two days old infant - a novel concept for that time. The porcelain head shows a flat nose, a closed mouth, a lightly sunken chin and chubby cheeks. The head is lightly tinted and the eyebrows and lashes are delicately painted. The newborn is dressed in an original christening robe consisting of a white under dress and outer garment with wide lace trimming. A light blue satin ribbon embellishes the dress. Underneath the little on is wearing a diaper and long socks. The doll was designed by the American sculptor Jeno Juszko. Only a few character babies carry the copyright number G 45520 and the date 1914. This is one of those rare models. The porcelain head is in a good condition. On the back of the head the doll is signed "© LA & S 1914", "#G 45520" and "Germany # 3 ½". The underarms and hands are made of rubber. They are damaged, showing cracks and discolouration. One finger is partially broken, the right pinkie finger is missing. The filled linen body, with jointed arms and swinging legs, is soiled and yellowed. The right elbow is patched with a bandage. There is a crier but our little newborn is no cry baby. The doll measures 42 cm standing; 62 cm including the dress. Louis Amberg & Son The American company Louis Amberg was founded in 1878 in Cincinnati, Ohio. At first bisque dolls were imported from Germany and France, later the manufactory produced its own composition dolls. In 1930 the company was sold to Edward Imeson Horsman, market leader in the American toy industry. Their popular "bottle" baby" doll, with a porcelain head by German makers, was designed to look like a newborn baby.
