      American, 1905-1977. Oil on canvas. Depicts night scene in railroad yard. Draws upon American realist tradition while incorporating expressive brush strokes. Stretcher pencil signed on reverse, "Railroad Yard (?) - Marion Junkin." 23 1/2" x 33 1/2" s.s., in white frame to 27 3/4" x 38". Junkin exhibited with the Pennsylvania Academy and the Corcoran and was renowned for his cubist still lifes. Junkin was a professor of art at Vanderbilt (1941-1946) and head of the art department at Washington & Lee University from 1947-1973.

Marion was the great-great grandson of George Junkin (1790 -1868), founder of Lafayette College, Pennsylvania and President of Miami University of Ohio. Marion Junkin was chair of the Art Department at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Many of his paintings are a blend of abstract expressionism and surrealism.
