ISAAC DE JOUDERVILLE (after Rembrandt) Cupid Resting

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

ISAAC DE JOUDERVILLE (after Rembrandt) Cupid Resting. Etching, 1640s. 88x119 mm; 3 1/2x4 3/4 inches, narrow margins. Ex-collection Maximilian Fürst von Waldburg zu Wolfegg und Waldsee (Lugt 2542, verso). A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce etching. We have not found another impression at auction in the past 30 years. Originally identified as a work of Rembrandt by Bartsch and other early cataloguers, that attribution has since been rejected (the current impression is signed "Jouderville" in the plate lower right). White and Boon note that this etching reproduces a painting signed "Rembrandt f 1634" in the Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. The Rijksmuseum's, Amsterdam, impression of this etching is dated 1648 in ink. Jouderville (1612-1645) was an orphan whose parents had come from Metz. He became an apprentice of Rembrandt in November 1629 and traveled with him to Amsterdam in 1631. He painted mainly Rembrandtesque portraits and historical allegories. His paintings were so faithful to Rembrandt's style that, following his early death and later, many of his works were erroneously attributed to Rembrandt, a trend which continued over to this particular etching as well. Bartsch 132 (as Rembrandt); Nowell-Usticke 132.

II, Kat.

LITERATURE W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, vol. VI, Landau/Pfalz 1983, p. 3720, cat. no. 2328, reproduced p. 3927. NOTE De Jouderville was apprenticed to Rembrandt in Leiden between 1629 and 1631, and is thus one of his earliest known pupils. He was also one of Rembrandt's most faithful followers, since he continued to paint in a style wholly derived from Rembrandt's own when in Leiden in circa 1630, long after (or presumably so given the paucity of dated works) his Master had moved on. Not surprisingly, given that Gerrit Dou was also probably a Rembrandt pupil at the same time, De Jouderville's physiognomies also resemble those found in Dou's early work, as can be seen in the present picture, which was thought by Walther R. Valentiner to be by Dou. Professor Dr Werner Sumowski considers this to be an early work, painted while De Jouderville was still in Rembrandt's studio, circa 1630-31. He compares it with other early pictures, such as A young man with a coloured scarf, in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (see Literature, vol. II, p. 1439, cat. no. 940, reproduced) or A laughing man with a golden chain, in Museum Bredius, The Hague (ibid., p. 1440, cat. no. 941, reproduced).

Isaac de Joudreville (Leyden 1613 - vor 1648 Amsterdam)

      Est: €30,000 - €50,000

Portrait of a young man, oil on canvas, 66.2 x 51.6 cm, unframed, (Wo) This suggestive portrait of a young man facing the spectator with the calm earnestness of his dark eyes, and whose face is surrounded by a white lace collar, has traditionally been regarded as an autograph Rembrandt (see under Provenance and Literature). Only Werner Sumowski found it to be a work by Isaac de Joudreville, who, like Rembrandt, was born in Leyden. Together with Gerard Dou, he was one of Rembrandt's first students. According to Sumowski, the present work is reminiscent of Lieven in the late 1620s. In the Amsteram corpus it is compared with cat. nos. 1286 (Constantijn Huygens, Amsterdam) and 1260 (Portrait of Rembrandt, Cevat Collection). Here one can observe an early Joudreville under the influence of Jan Lievens. The painting belongs to the same group as the female tronies in Helsinki und Augsburg (cat. nos. 942 and 943). The artist depicted the same model one more time (Sumowski, cat. no. 2330). The contact between the young Joudreville and Rembrandt was established by Joudreville's father, a Frenchman who had been running the well-known inn Schilt van Vrankrijk in Leyden as from 1607. When Rembrandt left Leyden in 1631, Joudreville followed his teacher to Amsterdam. Provenance: sale, Paley, London (as Rembrandt); sale, Christie’s, London, 16 June 1900, lot 65 (as Rembrandt); P. & D. Colnaghi, London (as Rembrandt); Steinmeyer, Cologne (as Rembrandt); Theodor Fleitmann Collection, New York (died 1975); Minusio, Switzerland; private property, Switzerland Certificate: In his written communication of 21 November 2003 Professor Werner Sumowski confirms the authenticity of the present work and refers to its publication in his volume on the pupils of Rembrandt (see under Literature). Literature: Wilhelm Bode, Hofstede de Groot, no. 559, repr. (as Rembrandt); Wilhelm R. Valentiner, Klassiker der Kunst, volume devoted to Rembrandt, Stuttgart 1908, p. 67, repr. Portrait of a man, bust-length, with a white beard and turban, wearing a gold chain oil on panel 183/4 x 141/4 in. (47.6 x 36.2 cm.) PROVENANCE presumably E. Roberts; sale, American Art Association, New York, 15 November 1928, lot 74, as Salomon Koninck. Anon. Sale, Christie's, New York, 10 October 1990, lot 30. LITERATURE W. Sumowski, Gem„lde der Rembrandt-Schler, Landau, 1983, VI, pp. 3720 and 3926, no. 2327. NOTES This colorful portrait of a man in a turban had been attributed for the most of the last century to Salomon Koninck, an Amsterdam artist known for painting portraits in the style of Rembrandt. In 1990, Professor Werner Sumowski convincingly reattributed the portrait to Isaac Jouderville, an artist associated with Rembrandt's final years in Leiden and first years in Amsterdam. Jouderville has the distinction of being one of Rembrandt's best documented pupils. His guardian paid Rembrandt an annual fee of 100 guilders for a two-year apprenticeship that Jouderville completed in November 1631. At that time, some art historians propose, that Jouderville followed Rembrandt to Amsterdam and worked as an active assistant to the master.
