    • RONALD JOSEPH (1910 - 1992) Untitled (Family at the Table).
      Jun. 04, 2020

RONALD JOSEPH (1910 - 1992) Untitled (Family at the Table).

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

RONALD JOSEPH (1910 - 1992) Untitled (Family at the Table). Oil and enamel on a thick wood panel, circa 1940. 565x406 mm; 22 1/4x16 inches. Signed in oil, verso. Provenance: private collection, Massachussetts. This striking, modernist painting is one of the earliest works by Ronald Joseph that we have located. Ronald Joseph was a student at the Harlem Community Art Center in 1939, where he studied lithography under Reva Helfond, befriended Robert Blackburn and later taught. Displaying the apparent influence of Matisse and Picasso, Joseph's early oil paintings were more influenced by European sources than many of his contemporaries who instead focused on social realism. A native of St. Kitts in the British West Indies, Ronald Joseph moved to New York as a child. His student works were included in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he studied at the Ethical Culture School, Fieldston School and Pratt Institute. He worked in the mural section of the Federal Art Project of the WPA, and was a representative of the Harlem Artists' Guild to the New York World's Fair (1939-1940). After service in the Army Air Corps, Joseph was awarded a Rosenwald Fellowship in 1948. The funds allowed him to live and work abroad--first in Peru, then Paris, before settling in Brussels. Two of his works from this Rosenwald period are included in the 2009-10 traveling museum exhibition, A Force for Change: African American Art and the Julius Rosenwald Fund.

      RONALD JOSEPH (1910 - 1992) Paris Vista (#6).

      Est: $12,000 - $18,000

RONALD JOSEPH (1910 - 1992) Paris Vista (#6). Oil on linen canvas, circa 1950-52. 991x813 mm; 39x32 inches. Signed and titled in pencil on the canvas, verso. Signed, titled and inscribed "Return to Bob Blackburn, 44 East 21 St." in graphite on the stretcher bars, verso. Provenance: private New York collection. This modernist painting is one of the largest oil canvases by Ronald Joseph that we have seen - only a handful of his Paris oil paintings from the early 1950s are known today. Joseph's early oil paintings were influenced by Picasso, Braque and other European artists while most of his contemporaries focused on social realism. A native of St. Kitts in the British West Indies, Ronald Joseph moved to New York as a child. He was quickly identified as a very talented young artist - his student works were included in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he studied at the Ethical Culture School, Fieldston School and Pratt Institute. He worked in the mural section of the Federal Art Project of the WPA, and was a representative of the Harlem Artists' Guild to the New York World's Fair (1939-1940). By 1943, Joseph had received recognition - James A. Porter described him as New York's "foremost Negro abstractionist painter." He experimented with abstraction alongside his friend Bob Blackburn through the 1950s. Joseph had met Blackburn in Reva Helfond's lithography studio at the Harlem Art Center soon after he graduated from high school. After service in the Army Air Corps, Joseph was awarded a Rosenwald Fellowship in 1948. The funds allowed him to live and work abroad--first in Peru, then Paris. His work from these travels is large undocumented; according to Rosenwald scholar, Daniel Schulman, many are undated or simply dated "1948-1952". He later settled permanently in Brussels. Porter p. 130; Schulman p. 136.

This modernist painting is one of the earliest works by Ronald Joseph that we have located, and only a handful of his paintings are from the 1940s. Ronald Joseph was a student at the Harlem Community Art Center in 1939, where he studied lithography under Reva Helfond, befriended Robert Blackburn and later taught. As this painting's indebtness to Picasso's blue period demonstrates, Joseph's early oil paintings were more influenced by European sources than many of his contemporaries, who instead focused on social realism. A native of St. Kitts in the British West Indies, Ronald Joseph moved to New York as a child. His student works were included in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he studied at the Ethical Culture School, Fieldston School and Pratt Institute. Ronald Joseph (American, 20th Century)

      Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Paris Vista Signed and titled "Ronald Joseph..." on the reverse, inscribed "...Return to Bob Blackburn 44 East 21st" on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 39 1/2 x 32 in. (100.3 x 81.2 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure. N.B. Born in the British West Indies, Ronald Joseph moved to New York at the age of thirteen. Just seven years later, under the teaching of H.E. Fritz, Joseph was thought to be the most up-and-coming artist in the New York school system. During the 1930s, he studied printmaking along with Robert Blackburn under Riva Helfond at the Harlem Art Center, where Joseph later taught. He worked in the mural section of the WPA and was a representative of the Harlem Artists' Guild to the New York World's Fair (1939-1940). By 1943, prominent art critic James Porter considered him the "foremost Negro abstractionist painter" in New York. His work, inspired by Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris, was featured in a Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition during a time when most New York artists focused their efforts on social problems through a realist depiction. Robert Blackburn founded the Printmaking Workshop in New York in 1948. In 1949, Blackburn was named the Master Printer by the National Academy of Design. Shortly after, Joseph moved to Belgium where his work flourished and he experienced extreme success. In 1989 he returned to the United States to speak at a discussion called "Black Printmakers and the WPA," where he reunited with Blackburn and received many accolades. The Library of Congress recently put together an exhibition of Blackburn's work as well as highlights from his own personal collection, including works by Ronald Joseph.
