Lily Delissa Joseph (British, 1863-1940) City of London Skies and Flowers (Roofs of High Holborn)oil on canvas, signed,

      Est: £6,000 - £8,000

Lily Delissa Joseph (British, 1863-1940) City of London Skies and Flowers (Roofs of High Holborn) oil on canvas, signed, titled to gallery label verso, in original gilt oak frame 53 x 57 1/2in. (134.5 x 146cm.) * Born Lily Solomon in 1863, Joseph was the younger sister of the noted artist Solomon J. Solomon, RA, PRBA. This work is believed to have been painted circa 1936. Another version of this picture, dated c.1937, was bought by The Chantrey Bequest for the Tate Gallery. Provenance: Chris Beetles Limited, 8 & 10 Ryder Street, St. James's, London. The Artist's Family and thence by descent. ** Condition: Appears very original. Examined under UV and no retouching or strengthening apparent. Would benefit from restretching as canvas is a little slack and shows some uneveness to centre left margin. There are also several small abrasions to the surface of the paint showing the canvas beneath in this area. These are not obvious and only visible under close examination. A little light craquelure to the more heavily applied areas of paint to sky. Some scratching out by the artist to the rooftop edges, which is original. Original gilded oak frame - probably re-gilded as it is very bright. Exhibited: 'Jewish Artists in England 1656-1956', Whitechapel Art Gallery, No.-Dec. 1956, No.19 (Lent by Mrs. G. Salaman). The Chris Beetles Summer Show 2001, No.62.
