PROVENANCE: Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, June 4-14, 2012, lot 728; Private collection, Ridgway, Colorado, acquired from the above. The author of this vivid scene of mountains and billowing clouds, Ásgrímur Jónsson was one of the first Icelandic painters to make a living from his art. After training at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen from 1900 to 1903, he traveled widely and adopted as his primary subject the prominent mountains of his native Icelandic landscape, as exemplified by the present work. His lifetime was punctuated by achievement, including an honorary professorship at the University of Iceland and an honorary membership in the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, as well as being made a Knight of Dannebrog, first class, culminating in 1933, when he was granted the distinction of Grand Knight of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon. Shortly before he died in 1958, he donated his house and studio in Reykjavik to the Icelandic government along with every painting in his possession at that time. These and the house are now part of the National Gallery of Iceland. HID01801242017
