      Nov. 08, 2018

RAYMOND JONSON (AMERICAN, 1891-1982) THE WINDOW, PETERBOROUGH, NEW HAMPSHIRE, 19

      Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Raymond Jonson (American, 1891-1982) The Window, Peterborough, New Hampshire, 1919 Oil on canvas 40 x 32 inches (101.6 x 81.3 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Raymond Jonson / 1919 Dated and titled on the stretcher: The Window - Peterborough N.H. 1919 PROVENANCE: Bonhams, San Francisco, California, December 8, 2004, lot 113; Private collection, Santa Barbara, California. The Window, Peterborough, New Hampshire is indicative of Jonson's early pointillist style common throughout his Chicago paintings. The palette recalls the one from his 1918 portrait of his wife Vera, which is in the Jonson Reserve Collection at the University of New Mexico Art Museum. The signature with the symbol in the middle of the date is also common from this period. Although more representational than his "Earth Rhythms" and "Pueblo" series, this painting employs a similar palette and pointillist handling. Foreshadowed coloristically by his 1917 painting Light at the New Mexico Museum of Art, The Window, Peterborough, New Hampshire is a lovely, fairly rare example of Jonson's early work. We wish to thank scholar Matthew Rowe for providing the note for this painting. HID04901242017
