Joni (Icilio Frederico, 1866-1946). Imitation 15th century painted and gilded binding

            Est: £800 - £1,200

Joni (Icilio Frederico, 1866-1946). Imitation 15th century painted and gilded binding * Joni (Icilio Frederico, 1866-1946). A 'tavolette' painted and gilded folio panel binding, imitating a 15th century Sienese book cover, comprising two bevel-edged wooden boards joined by a leather spine, the upper board with a central metal relief panel, depicting the Virgin Mary holding a book, a halo around her head, standing on a gilt tiled floor, within a niche with decorative background patterned in blue, yellow, white, green and gold, the panel set within a relief sectional border of gilt scrolling foliate and floral decoration on a dark blue ground, each corner with a decorative metal boss on a red ground, decorative gilt borders to each section, the lower board with matching borders and bosses, the central design depicting Saint Macarius holding a sword, a halo around his head, standing on a red and white patterned floor, within a niche with decorative gilt background, some flaking and chipping, particularly at the edges (some of which may have been by Joni who was in the habit of distressing his bindings), floor area of lower board with surface loss, central portion of spine leather rubbed with a couple of tears and small losses, versos of boards with some wormholes, one board verso with small surface loss, 455 x 680 mm (18 x 26 3/4 ins), displayed in a period wooden case, with glazed doors (left upper hinge detached) and hanging chain (53.5 x 76 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: For a similar example see Beinecke Library, Yale University (GEN MSS 1452). Also Cheffins Auctions, 22nd April 2021 lot 193 for an example with the same Saint depicted (his clothing in different colours and with a simpler background) on one cover, but with armorials on the other cover, instead of the elaborate relief panel portraying the Virgin Mary on the present example. Known as the 'prince' of Sienese forgers, Icilio Joni began work in a gilding workshop in Siena as a young man. He went on to set up his own restoration business which led him into the world of forgeries, finding that the market for such items in 19th century Italy was flourishing. Like a number of his contemporaries he forged panel paintings, triptychs, and wooden caskets, passing them off as fifteenth or sixteenth century originals, but, more unusually, he also forged bookbindings. He had read of the distinctive and highly decorated Tavolette di Biccherna book covers used by the city of Siena and started to produce his own, layering wooden panels with plaster and painting them with tempera and gold. Although his bindings were somewhat different from the originals - since he had never been to the Archivio di Stato to study the originals - he was able to sell his work through associates in Florence and Rome, and his success was so great that he later claimed in his autobiography that a director from the Archivio di Stato had been convinced by an example of his work and declared it beautiful. Eventually, in the pursuit of fame, Joni revealed the truth, but his workmanship was such that he still received commissions for these bindings, which continue to be sought after today.

Icilio Frederico JONI (1866–1946) The Virgin and Child Tempera and gold leaf with pastiglia and punchwork on walnut panel Six wax seals impressed with the Piccolomini coat of arms to the reverse Mounted in a later gilt frame 31.5 x 24.5cm (the panel) PROVENANCE: Apparently with Christie's, London, early twentieth century (stock number 544DP stencilled to the reverse of the panel in black ink) Selwyn John Curwen Brinton (1859–1940), by whom gifted to his god daughter Gifted by her to the present vendor, 2003 OTHER NOTES: Icilio Joni was a Sienese painter, gilder, and restorer whose exceptional eye and facility with these media led him to create imitations of the work of fourteenth and fifteenth century Sienese masters so faithfully and convincingly that his works fooled such connoisseurs as Bernard Berenson and entered many important collections as Renaissance originals. A particular form of work reproduced by Joni were the tavolette di Biccherna, painted wooden panels used as covers for the ledgers of the Biccherna, a Sienese municipal official. These tavolette, some of which were painted by important Sienese Renaissance masters, had a particular form, with a central painted field within painted or pastiglia borders. The present lot is an example of Joni adapting that form to create what purports to be a private devotional painting. The coat of arms painted in the upper left corner and also impressed on the wax seals to the reverse are of those of the Piccolomini, the great noble family of Siena – apparently an attempt by Joni to fabricate provenance for the panel – while the arms in the other corners are those of various Sienese bodies. The panel was formerly in the collection of Selwyn Brinton, an art historian whose many published works are largely devoted to early Renaissance art. As Brinton died in 1938, just as Joni's work was coming to light – Joni published his revealing autobiography in 1932 – it seems likely that Brinton believed the panel to be a fifteenth century work.

Icilio Federico Joni, zugeschrieben Two Biccherna panels

            Est: €1,500 - €2,000

Icilio Federico Joni, zugeschrieben 1866 Siena - 1946 ebenda Two Biccherna panels The inscription on the back panel dated MDII (1502), and monogrammed "EP" in the large cartouche / "CP". Tempera and gold over pastiglia auf panel. Each 41 x 28 cm. Damaged. Framed (56 x 71 cm).

Joni (Icilio Frederico, 1866-1946). Pair of painted & gilded panels imitating a 15th century binding * Joni (Icilio Frederico, 1866-1946). A pair of 'tavolette' painted and gilded panels imitating a 15th century Sienese binding, two separate bevel-edged boards with remnants of leather spine attached to each, upper board depicting a youthful male saint wearing a green tunic and metal breastplate, standing on a black and white checkered floor within a relief niche, a halo around his head, and his hands resting on the hilt of a sword, within a relief sectional border of gilt scrolling foliate volutes on a black or burgundy ground, the centre of each side with a heraldic shield, lower board similarly relief panelled and with matching volute decoration, with large heraldic shield in centre surrounded by 6 smaller heraldic shields, some surface loss of paint and gesso, and boards splitting to lower edge, verso of boards each with circular painting, that to upper board depicting a profile head and shoulders portrait of an angel, with pounced halo, on a gilt ground, that to lower board depicting a head and shoulders portrait of a devotional female figure with downcast eyes, dressed in a red robe and white wimple, diameter of each 9 cm (3 1/2 ins), each framed by a thick card mount overlay, painted with gilt foliate volute decoration on a black ground to match exterior of boards, with large pin holes to margins, detached and worn, with some loss, 19 x 12.5 cm (7 1/2 x 5 ins), overall dimensions of boards 19.8 x 13.2 cm (7 3/4 x 5 1/4 ins) QTY: (2) NOTE: For a similar example see that housed in the Beinecke Library, Yale University (GEN MSS 1452). Known as the 'prince' of Sienese forgers, Icilio Joni began work in a gilding workshop in Siena as a young man. The painted heraldic shields depicted on the panels are largely spurious, but tend to copy or are similar to medieval examples such as Henry I Count of Vaudémont in Aspilogia II (d. 1279), Aschfeld of Sussex, the King of Cyprus, Lusignan, Count de la Marche, Seigneur de Valence, the King of Germany, King of Bohemia, King of Rome, and Jean de Barres, Seigneur d'Oissorey (c.1230-1289, French knight and crusader). Further descriptions of the heraldic shields can be supplied.

F. R. Shapley, Paintings from the Samuel H. Kress Collection. Italian Schools XII-XV Century, London, Phaidon, 1966, pp. 126-127, fig. 341). Gianni Mazzoni

Two wooden book covers in the style of so-called “Tavolette della Biccherna”, the elaborately decorated fourteenth-century covers of the medieval account books in the treasury of Siena. Joined by a leather spine (rubbed), front cover with the portrait of a lady in profile against a Tuscan landscape background (resembling the Florentine noblewoman Giovanna Tornabuoni, depicted by Domenico Ghirlandaio and others), the rear cover with a coat of arms reading “libertas”; punched decorations and four bosses on each cover (painting slightly faded, lacking one boss on rear cover; one panel laid down on later board). Joni was a notorious artist from Siena who specialised in producing imitations of ancient paintings (especially from the Sienese School) and of the “Biccherne”. Tempera and mineral paint on wood, hallmarked in gold Italy, Siena, around 1890 Icilio Federico Joni (1865-1946) - Italian painter Forgery of the original 'Tavolette della biccherna', around 1430 Magnificent, richly painted and embellished Gothic book cover Embossed and embellished in the style of the Sienese account books of the 15th century Dimensions: book cover 37.5 x 61.5 cm; book cover lid 37.5 x 28 cm Age-according very good condition References: M. Foot, A Pair of Bookcovers of the late 19th Century by I. F. Joni in: Studies in the History of Bookbinding, p. 296 The high art of undiscovered forgeries - Icilio Federico Joni sold his copies of the 'Tavolette della biccherna', the important wooden book covers of the account books of the tax authorities of Siena, worldwide to collectors over centuries. These belong to the most valuable book covers today. Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. This is an especially glorious and typical example of one of the most famous series of book cover forgeries, executed by the Sienese book cover artist Icilio Federico Joni. This is possibly a at the time undiscovered book cover forgery of a Sienese book cover. The Gothic book cover is magnificent, richly painted and embellished in the style of the Sienese account books of the 15th century with the use of the materials of the time. The front shows a detailed depiction of Saint Bridget of Sweden. On the back cover are several coat of arms depictions as well as hand-written lines of text. It was executed in tempera and mineral paint on wood and it is richly hallmarked in gold. The cover is framed by a floral border on blue ground. In every corner is a brass hump. The back cover possesses of a hook of a central clasp. Joni imitated the 'Tavolette della biccherna' in his works, the important wooden book covers of the Sienese account books. The tax authorities of Siena commissioned them between the mid-13th century and the late 17th century in elaborate form. They belong to the most valuable book covers today. Joni sold his book covers as originals of the 14th and 15th century worldwide to collectors over centuries. He confirmed that they were all forgeries and he was even as bold to sign some of the still existing originals in his autobiography that was published in 1932. He had achieved his aim in life to fool experts worldwide. Contrary to Joni's later published forgeries are here the via a leather spine connected covers. It is an extremely sent and as such even by experts indistinguishable forgery with excellent and carefully executed traces of age, like e.g. the missing clasp at the front cover, diverse abrasions, cracks and chips in the paint. Only a total of 18 of such book covers by Joni are verifiable worldwide. The design of this book cover is almost identical with the sample of the British Library. The book cover is in age-according very good condition with traces of age and wear that are intended by the artist. The book cover measures 37.5 x 61.5 cm, the book cover lid 37.5 x 28 cm and the total dimensions with the frame are 65 x 41 cm. Voir M. Foot, A Pair of Bookcovers of the late 19th Century by I.F. [Senis: Per Academiam Intronatorum, 1669]. 2 o (340 x 218 mm). Errata leaf. Two engraved plates by Guillaume Vallet, the first, after Raphael Vanni, showing the B.V.M. looking down with favor on an allegorical figure of Siena. the second, after Carlo Maratta, showing (under the title of this work) a woman watering the tree of the arts from which cherubs gather fruit. (Lacks frontispiece, some dampstaining.) Painted 'tavolette' book covers in Biccherna style, front side with portrait of St. Ansanus Anicius, patron Saint of Sienna, the back cover with 14 coats-of-arms of patricians and the title, both on gold grounds, 4 metal bosses on each side, probably by Icilio Federico Joni (sides rubbed, covers bowed, rebacked with leather). Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 8 November 1961. Joni was a Sienese painter and restorer who produced imitations of the wooden panel bindings (tavolette della biccherna) used to cover the accounts of Siena from the middle of the 13th to the end of the 17th centuries. By his own admission, he never visited the city archives to inspect the originals, and his bindings are in fact anachronistic. From 1459 the accounts were bound in leather, yet Joni gave his bindings dates post-1459. While he sold a number of his imitations as medieval and Renaissance originals, he openly described his forgery work in his autobiography (Le Memorie di un pittore di Quadri Antichi, 1932, English trans. 1936). Joni bindings -- undetected -- have graced some of the greatest book collections, including those of Hoe and Wilmerding. Even recognised as imitations, they had great cachet, as the commission by Lady Wantage for a binding in 1904 demonstrates. At least 14 examples of Joni's work are recorded and more are in circulation. See H.M. Nixon, 'Binding Forgeries,' Transactions of the VIth International Congress of Bibliophiles, 1969, Vienna, 1971, pp. 69-83; and M. Foot, 'A Pair of Bookcovers of the late 19th Century by I.F. The Fasti Senenses, compiled by two Jesuits, Sebastiano Conti and Giambattista Ferrari, is a collection of biographies of the Sienese saints, blesseds, and servants of God, arranged chronologically according to their feast days on the local calendar. Entries range from St. Ansanus (depicted on the front cover of the binding), a martyr under Diocletian and patron of Siena, to a South American martyr, Horatio de Vecchi, S.J., and include the most famous of Sienese saints, St. Catherine. Nixon, 'Binding Forgeries,' Transactions of the VIth International Congress of Bibliophiles, 1969, Vienna, 1971, pp. 69-83; and M. Foot, 'A Pair of Bookcovers of the late 19th Century by I.F. JONI, Icilio Federico (b. 1865/6) -- Painted 'tavolette' book covers in Biccherna style. [Siena: late 19th century]. Each panel 387 x 283mm. Two wooden book covers joined by a leather spine, the front panel with 7 coat-of-arms and 8-lines of text, rear panel depicting the Archangel St. Michael carrying scales to weigh the souls of the dead on Judgement Day and triumphing over Satan, characteristic scroll-work borders and punched decoration to both covers, four bosses and 2 catchpieces on each panel (rubbed and scuffed, some cracking, most of which is almost certainly intentional.) AN EXAMPLE OF THE WORK OF THE SELF-PROFESSED FORGER, ICILIO FEDERICO JONI. Joni was a Sienese painter and restorer who produced imitations of the wooden panel bindings (tavolette della biccherna) used to cover the accounts of Siena from the middle of the 13th to the end of the 17th centuries. While he sold a number of his imitations as medieval and Renaissance originals, he openly described his forgery work in his autobiography (Le Memorie di un pittore di Quadri Antichi, 1932, English trans. 1936). Joni bindings -- undetected -- have graced some of the greatest book collections, including those of Borghese, Hoe, and Wilmerding. Even recognised as imitations, they had great caché, as the commission by Lady Wantage for a binding in 1904 demonstrates. More than 14 examples of Joni's work are known. Somewhat curiously, the present binding is almost identical to one in the British Library (illustrated in Foot, op.cit.), where the Archangel St. Michael is on the front, not back, cover, and the shields bear different arms.
