        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

A RARE WHITE PLASTER BUST OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN. JONES, THOMAS DOW. 1811-1881. Signed T.D. Jones sculptor 1861. Height 33 in (84 cm); width 25 in (63.5 cm). Provenance: Purchased from Ralph G. Newman, the well-known Abraham Lincoln scholar and owner of the Abraham Lincoln Bookshop, February 14, 1990. Thomas Dow Jones was commissioned by the Ohio Republican Party to make a marble bust of Abraham Lincoln. The artist traveled to Springfield, IL and set up a studio at the St. Nicholas Hotel, where, with some difficulty, he persuaded Lincoln to sit for him. The sculpture was completed in February 1861, just before Lincoln left for Washington, DC and his inauguration. When shown the final product, the first to represent Lincoln with a beard, Lincoln reportedly said, 'I think it looks very much like the critter.' The original marble sculpture is in the Senate Chamber of the Ohio State Capital. Plaster copies of the Dow Jones bust are to be found in Harvard's Houghton Library, the New York Historical Society, the Indiana State House and the Governor's Mansion in Springfield, IL.
