        Est: $800 - $1,000

        Oil on canvas, sailboat in storm sea, clearly signed lower left, 14" x 18; in turn of the century frame, 17 1/2" x 21 1/2". Good condition, a few areas of paint loss, no evidence of any repairs or in-painting.  Marshall was born and raised in Boston.  He set sail for South America aboard the ship Sunbeam at 18 years old.  The ship caught fire and burned at sea, with Johnson as one of only 12 survivors. He returned to New England and studied at the Lowell Institute and the Boston Art Club, then studied with the notable marine painter William Norton.  In the 1880's, Marshall opened his own studio on West Street in downtown Boston.

        Marshall Johnson, Jr. (American, c.1850-1921) oil on canvas marine painting of an American clipper ship in choppy seas, rendered in grisaille. Signed lower left. Housed in a molded lemon-gilt style wood frame. Sight - 23 1/2" x 17 1/2". Frame - 28 1/2" x 22 1/2". Biography: Marshall Johnson was born in Boston and attended Lowell Institute. In his youth, he was one of twelve sailors to survive a fire on board a ship and its subsequent sinking off the coast of South America in 1870. He studied with marine painter William E. Norton for three years and in England, Holland, and France in the late 1880s. Upon his return to the United States, he maintained a studio in Boston. During his lifetime, he exhibited at the Jordan Art Gallery, Boston Art Club, and Copley Society. His depiction of the USS Constitution was used for many years as the logo for a New England insurance company. Source: Michael David Zellman, "300 Years of American Art".

        Description: This lot includes an oil on canvas painting by Marshall Johnson (1850 - 1921) titled "The Battleship - Night Scene". The painting is signed on the lower left side (Though difficult to see). The frame appears to be original to the piece and includes a few reference tags and marks. A couple of the notable ones is a pencil writing that reads ("Anderson Gallery" "Sale - May 10, 1933"), and a second engraved into the frame that appears to originate from Vose Galleries in Boston MA that reads ("1923" "R.C.N.M. Vose Boston" "#3372"). Condition: The painting has been in storage for over 40 years in our clients estate. Painting is dark and would benefit from a professional cleaning. Measurements: 54.5"L x 34.5"W
