DANIEL LARUE JOHNSON (1938 - 2017) Untitled (Black Box Series) Assemblage in a painted wooden box, circa 1965. 162x149x108 mm; 6 3/8x5 7/8x4 1/4 inches. Provenance: the estate of Naomi Caryl Hirshhorn, Los Angeles, CA. Naomi Caryl (1931 - 2022) was a singer, actress, artist and a longtime collector and patron of the arts in Los Angeles. She was the daughter of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, the financier, philanthropist, and collector of modern art whose gift to the nation of nearly 6,000 works of art established his namesake museum on the National Mall. She also was a longtime friend of Joan Wheeler Ankrum, the founder of the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles, whose gallery exhibited many African American artists. This small assemblage is an excellent example of Daniel LaRue Johnson's early Black Box series. Born in 1938 in Los Angeles, Johnson studied painting, sculpting and printmaking at the Chouinard Art Institute (now the California Institute of the Arts) in the early 1960s. After graduating in 1965, Johnson received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship, which allowed him and his wife, artist Virginia Jaramillo, to live in Paris. There he studied with Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti before settling back in New York. With his return to the US, Johnson shifted to colorful abstract paintings and Minimalist steel sculpture. Johnson's work has been exhibited in the Whitney Annual, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1964, 1970), the Some American History at the Institute for the Arts, Rice University, Houston (1971), Now Dig This! DANIEL LARUE JOHNSON (1938 - ) Past Time.

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

DANIEL LARUE JOHNSON (1938 - ) Past Time. Mixed media collage on canvas, 1962. 355x355 mm; 14x14 inches. Signed, titled, dated "Painted May 28, 62," and inscribed "Eichmann 6 million Jews, America ? Negroes" and "250.00" in ink verso. Illustrated in The Golden State Mutual Afro-American Art Collection, p. 14 (mis-identified, correct description on facing page). This is an early collage work by a young artist who was tackling issues that reflected the growing Civil Rights struggle. In 1963, Johnson travelled to New York with Melvin Edwards to see if his "ideas about American art and life were relevant to reality." According to Mary Schmidt Campbell, he continued to make assemblage works that year - "Danny Johnson, also a metal sculptor, whose abstract minimalist forms had begun to attract critical attention, crafted a piece entitled Yesterday, a box in which a headless doll drifts next to an American flag, which paid homage to the times. Johnson's assemblage, unlike Edwards's totems, proved to be a diversion from his major aesthetic direction." Campbell, p. 51.

Works from the earlier 1960s are dark assemblages which resemble Rauschenberg's 'Combines' and address - or, rather, confront - the Civil Rights issues which virtually monopolized African-American discourse during this time. The present work belongs to a group of brightly-colored, glossy-surfaced wood constructions belonging to the late 1960s. These works stand at the artist's self-created intersection of color-field painting, minimalist sculpture and African sources of color. Homage to René d'Harnoncourt was included in the exhibtion at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., following his death in 1968; controversial not just because of its title (referencing the museum's director and not the slain Civil Rights leader), but because its very nature defied definition: one critic observed that it was a painting that seems to float above the f
