May 28, 1868 Andrew Johnson Pardons Confederate Who Left The Union DS A 1p partly handwritten and partly printed document registering the presidential pardon of former Confederate Albert G. Holland, and signed by Holland at center as "Albert G. Holland." Holland's loyalty oath was recorded by Notary Public Charles Walter in Washington, D.C. No date but the revenue stamp cancellation is dated May 28, 1868. With an embossed notary public seal at lower left, and the cancelled 5-cent revenue stamp at bottom right. Expected wear including flattened paper folds and a few stray ink marks at top. Two clerical holes along the top, else near fine. 8" x 10." In part: [printed] "Whereas, ANDREW JOHNSON, President of the United States, did, on the 7th day of September, A.D., 1867, issue a Proclamation proclaiming full pardon to certain persons engaged in the late rebellion, condition upon taking and subscribing a certain oath therein set forth and hereto attached and herein inserted … NOW THEREFORE, in order that the undersigned may receive the benefit of said Proclamation he makes oath as follows: 'I [manuscript] Albert G. Holland [printed] do solemnly swear, (or affirm,) in the presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the union of the States thereunder; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the late rebellion, with reference to the emancipation of slaves. So help me God. [signed] Albert G. Holland." The National Park Service Soldiers and Sailors Database lists two viable candidates for our pardoned Confederate private Albert G. Holland. One of these was an Albert G. Holland affiliated with the 2nd Battery of Maryland Artillery, organized in September 1861; and a private by the same name is also associated with the 1st Regiment of Virginia Artillery, organized at the same time. Both of these battle units fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. On September 7, 1867, President Johnson issued the Second Amnesty Proclamation. This was just the latest iteration of a succession of presidential pardons extended to wayward Confederates; Lincoln had issued two, on December 8, 1863 and March 26, 1864, and Johnson had issued his first on May 29, 1865. Whereas Johnson's First Amnesty Proclamation excepted fourteen categories of individuals from blanket clemency, the September 7, 1867 proclamation restricted it to only three; those who had served in high Confederate government or military office, abused prisoners of war, or been involved in Lincoln's assassination could not partake. Johnson hoped that expanding the scope of eligibility for amnesty would further reconcile the nation. President Johnson's September 1867 proclamations underscore the complicated nature of Reconstruction. Reuniting the nation proved a slow and agonizing process. Andrew Johnson [Washington, D.C.], April 6, 1868 Andrew Johnson Purple Impeachment Ticket & Stub Ticket/Invitation A purple pasteboard impeachment trial ticket and stub dating from the impeachment proceedings of 17th U.S. President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875). April 6, 1868. [Washington, D.C.] The ticket is imprinted "U.S. Senate / Impeachment of the President / Admit the Bearer / April 6, 1868. / Gallery. / Geo. F. Brown / Sergeant-at-Arms." The detached admissions stub is imprinted "To be taken up at / Main Entrance / No. 406 / U.S. Senate." Expected light wear including scuffs. The left edge of the ticket is slightly ragged, and the bottom edge shows minor surface imperfections. Else near fine. The ticket measures approximately 3.5" x 2.875" while the stub measures about 2.875" x 1.25." Impeachment proceedings were levied against sitting President Johnson after the presidential ouster of Lincoln-appointed Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton in February 1868. Congress had passed the Tenure of Office Act in 1867 to restrict executive authority in hiring and firing office holders without Senate approval. Johnson was charged with eleven articles of impeachment, the majority of which related to his alleged violation of the Tenure of Office Act. The impeachment trial took place between March 5th and May 16, 1868, when President Johnson was finally acquitted of all charges. During the trial, approximately 1,000 attendance tickets were printed for each session day on a different color pasteboard. Tickets ranged in color from white, red, mauve, and yellow to green, purple, blue, and orange. This official pardon order, signed by President Andrew Johnson and countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward, grants a pardon to a Mr. F. Marshall of Mobile, Alabama. The document bears the official seal of the Presidency. It has the original folds but is still in excellent condition overall.

Original tan wrappers. House in a custom chemise and slipcase in brown cloth with gilt lettered spine measuring 6.5" x 9.75" overall. His Reconstruction Plan required that States had to abolish slavery before being readmitted to the Union but offered no role for Blacks in the politics of the South. Feb 24, 1868 brought the first Impeachment of an American President, for "high crimes and misdemeanors" due to his violation of the Tenure of Office Act. Overall approx. 3-3/4" L x 3/4" H. One of several historic American paper items in today's auction. From a large and important collection of autographs and documents, many pieces of which will be offered in the March American Sale. Andrew Johnson Appoints Sec. of State During Seward’s Folly, the Purchase of Alaska from Russia. Rare & Historic DS Signed as President from the Executive Mansion. 1p, [7.75” x 9.75"], DS “Andrew Johnson”, “Executive Mansion, Washington” and dated 23rd July, 1867. President Andrew Johnson appoints William Hunter, the second assistant to the Secretary of State “To discharge the duties of the Secretary of State during the absence of the Honorable William H. Seward”. From the timing of his absence, and the date of this appointment, it's likely that Seward was not present in Washington D.C. because of his key role in representing the United States in the negotiations with Russia for the purchase of Alaska, also known as “Seward’s Folly.” The purchase of Alaska has been referenced as a "bargain basement deal" and as the principal positive accomplishment of the presidency of Andrew Johnson. Alaska was formally transferred to the United States on October 18, 1867, through a treaty ratified by the United States Senate. The purchase added 586,412 square miles of new territory to the United States for the cost of $7.2 million dollars. Reactions to the purchase in the United States were mostly positive, as many believed possession of Alaska would serve as a base to expand American trade in Asia. Some opponents labeled the purchase as "Seward's Folly", or "Seward's Icebox", as they believed that the United States had acquired useless land. Seward had been interested in whaling as a senator and his interest in Russia was a byproduct of this. In his speech prior to the 1860 convention, he predicted the Russian territory would become part of the U.S., and when he learned in 1864 that it might be for sale, he pressed the Russians for negotiations. Russian minister Baron Eduard de Stoeckl recommended the sale because the territory lost money, and Russia could use the money more efficiently for its expansion in Siberia or Central Asia. Keeping the land ran the risk of it being captured in war by the British, or overrun by American settlers. Stoeckl was given the authority to make the sale in March 1867. He negotiated with Secretary of State Seward who initially offered $5 million, but then settled on $7.2 million. On March 15, Seward presented a draft treaty to the Cabinet which was signed in the early morning of March 30, and ratified by the Senate on April 10. 1865-Dated. Andrew Johnson Indian Peace Medal. Large Size. United States Mint Struck in Bronze. NGC graded Uncirculated Details Cleaned. Julian IP-40. 76 mm. This Indian Peace medal, dated 1865, was likely struck about 1900 using the new reverse design. Boldly struck with choice eye appeal, the holder states cleaned yet we see no sign of it. This is an impressive large size medal features the new reverse Engraved by Anthony Pacquet and struck at the United States Mint. This reverse of this medal was originally to have been made for Abraham Lincoln’s Second Term medal, but when Lincoln was assassinated the U.S. Mint decided to use the reverse anyway on President Andrew Johnson’s new medal. The reverse features many American icons, including a pedestaled bust of George Washington, a steam engine, plow, herd of buffalo, etc. Sharp and extremely clean and smooth in appearance with pleasing underlying red luster.

ANDREW JOHNSON SIGNED CIVIL WAR MILITARY APPOINTMENT James Creney of the 95th NY Vols, raised in rank to Breveted Colonel, effective March 13th, 1865, for "Gallant and meritorious services in front of Petersburg, Virginia". Signed by Andrew Johnson as President and Edwin M Stanton as Secretary of War on April 5th, 1866. On parchment, with paper seal, docketed. In modern frame, matted and glazed. OS: 22" x 18", SS: 18" x 14". Good condition, folded, as issued. Creney was a highly decorated officer, who participated in the battles of Gettysburg (under Biddle), the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. He was in command as Lt Col of the Regiment as of June 3rd, 1864, was severely wounded in the June 18th assault on Petersburg, returned in late August after recovering only to be severely wounded again on Feb 5th, 1865 at Dabney Mills.

Handwritten manuscript in pencil by Andrew Johnson, unsigned, one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, no date but circa 1874. The manuscript, likely written as a speech draft, is headed "Debt of the State," and reads, in part: "Agriculturalists and mechanics are somewhat interested in high taxes…Debt of the U. S…ample for the purposes of the people. President to be elected by the people and the election of Senators to be taken from the Legislature. Reference to myself I hope will not be indelicate. Betrayed by the Legislature and defeated. Washington had his Arnold, Jefferson, Burr, Caesar his Brutus &c. (The ladies God bless them &c). I am ambitious and would not be worthy of myself. Granges, Registration of Commerce between the states &c. Agriculture, Mechanics and labor constitute the foundation rock upon which the whole structure of Government rests. Distinguished men who have been farmers and mechanics & Adam and the great father…I would rather…upon governments the dust of the field &c…I had hoped that the baneful planet of fire and blood have been chased away &c Glory to God in the highest." In very good condition, with staining and toning, not affecting readability.
