Native American, Pacific Northwest, Salish / Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people, signed by Jim Johnny, ca. 1998 CE. A hand-carved cedar wood panel of a stylized frog with bark fiber trim. The panel is modeled after traditional stylized masks used during potlatches or other ceremonies. The panel is painted with black and red acrylic paints to highlight the exaggerated features. The visage is a hybrid of human and amphibian, with wide red lips broad nostrils beside a protruding nose bridge. The black eyes slightly bulge out from under thick black brows. Frogs are believed to bring good luck and fortune in many Northwestern indigenous cultures. Added to the wooden panel is a braided bark trim and tassels that hang from the sides. The verso is signed by the artist and dated, and a suspension cord has been added for displaying this piece.
