            Nov. 04, 2023

Charles John Collings Canadian Rockies Watercolor

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Watercolor Painting on Paper. 15 5/8" by 22 1/2" framed. 7 1/2" by 14 3/4" unframed. Charles John (CJC) Collings (1848 - 1931) was active/lived in British Columbia / Canada, England. Charles Collings is known for Atmospheric watercolor landscape, mountain scenes and coastal views. Charles John Collings (1848 - 1931) A prominent English and Canadian painter and draftsman, Charles John Collings was born in Chudleigh, Devonshire, England and died in Seymour Arm (on Shuswap Lake), British Columbia, where he had lived since coming to Canada in 1910. A wealthy recluse, he lived in what is even now (2015) considered a rather remote part of Canada and he chose not to associate with the Canadian art community, or for that matter with the British art community, apart from one visit to England in 1920. Instead, most of his works were sold through an intrepid British dealer who visited Collings in Canada. At that time, in England, his works were favorably compared with that of British painting icon J.M.W. Turner; currently Collings' works are favorably contrasted with that of Canadian painting icon Emily Carr. Hundreds of examples of Collings' paintings and drawings are in the collections of Canadian museums including that of the National Gallery of Canada. (2) Quote: 'What the Rockies gave him was the solitude to develop a singular perception of the landscape without the interference of critics or the influence of other artists.' (3) Collings' mediums were watercolors, oils, charcoal and pencil. He is primarily known for his romantic atmospheric watercolor paintings. These were technically achieved by, amongst other things, soaking the support paper for days to break down the sizing. This allowed the pigment to penetrate and also for the mixing of pigments directly on the paper. His best known subjects were fictionalized landscapes, mountains, lakes, rivers, forests and rural scenes of British Columbia; however, there are also works done in England and elsewhere (he travelled to Alaska, the Yukon, Alberta and Ontario) that depicted castles, buildings, villages, interiors, street scenes, historic sites, genre*, still life, frontier life, the prairies and marine scenes. His styles could be described as Barbizon School*, Impressionism*, Realism* and Tonalism*. AskART Images have some excellent illustrations of his oeuvre. Collings is considered a self-taught artist. He started painting professionally in mid life, after a successful 20 year career as a lawyer in the insurance industry. His only academic art instructions were some brief lessons from Nathaniel Hughes John Baird in London (mistakenly referred to by several sources as M.J. Baird). Collings does not appear to have belonged to any art associations in Canada or England; however, he exhibited with the Royal Academy of Arts* in 1893, 1894 and 1895; the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts* in 1897 (yes, records show only once, and it was 13 years before coming to Canada); the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers from 1898 to 1909; the Art Institute of Chicago* Annual International Water Color Exhibition in 1921 and 1922; and, he was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Art Association of Montreal* in 1914.

Four Historic 19th Century Tennessee Letters, including Charles W. Charlton, editor of Brownlow's "Whig", and John Dickson, brother of William Dickson

            Est: $300 - $500

Four (4) 19th Century East TN letters, including Charles W. Charlton, editor of Brownlow's "Whig", and John Dickson, brother of William Dickson. 1st item: Charles W. Charlton, Knoxville, TN, editor of William Gannaway "Parson" Brownlow's newspaper the "Whig" (1869-1870) letter reading, "Knoxville Tenn/April 30, 1860/Hon W[illiam M[ontgomery] Churchwell/Washington/D.C./Dr. Sir/Your letter has been received. Your allusions to Mr. [George] Bradfield are just. His course has been anything else than democratic. Brownlow has him under his thumb. He is afraid to speak out, and has deliberately and in apporition [sic] to all advice from his best friends, robbed (?) Johnson all the while. He has refused, again and again, to publish anything from the pen of Johnson. You may rest assured that he is not under the Control of the faction on the Corner, for they are right, all of them, out & out for Johnson. It is Henry Elliot & Graves who seem to be leading him on. With Lewis he has nothing to do. The Tennessee papers have "poured hot shot into him" without stink. He know throws himself upon his dignity and his independence. I am glad, heartily glad, to hear it suggested that there is some possibility that some parties at Washington might be induced to buy the paper, if it could be bought. Will you, in your next, be a little more explicit in the details of this transaction. Who are the parties or party that would be likely to make this investment? What amount would they be likely to want to invest? State everything plainly & distinctly, & let me know all about it. Very Respectfully, C. W. Charlton. Includes contemporary gold metal frame. Sheet - 9 3/4" H x 7 3/4" W. Frame - 11 3/8" H x 8 3/4" W. Mid 19th century. 2nd item: John Dickson (1780/5-1855), brother of William Dickson of the Dickson-Williams Mansion in Greeneville, Greene County, TN, letter reading "Greeneville 6th October 1832/Captain James G Simpson/Dr Sir/I have been expecting for some time to have heard from you-having mentioned to you the last time you were here that I should be glad to have some payments on my claims against you and that I would take a load of ham at any time you had it to spare...please let me know by return of mail if this will meet your convenience-very respectfully your friend J Dickson". Housed in a contemporary wooden frame. Sheet - 12 1/4" H x 7 3/4" W. Framed - 17 3/4" H x 13 3/4" W. Early 19th century. 3rd item: Samuel Anderson (1805-1849), resident of Sullivan County, TN, letter reading "Blountville 6 August 1837/Dear Sir/J R Fain left home on yesterday and will not return for eight or Ten days he has neglected to answer your letters; he has seen Mi[s]s Evans she said she could not come over to your house for five or six weeks she has been in the habit of charging $1.50 per week...I do not no [sic] of any good lots of bacon for sale...Fain is out trying to buy cattle. Yours with respect Sam Anderson/Jas C. Simpsonn" with later additions. Housed in a contemporary wooden frame. Sheet - 10 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W. Framed - 16 3/4" H x 13 3/4" W. Mid 19th century. 4th item: William Moore (1791-1854), resident of Cocke County, TN, letter reading "Chucky Bend 20th Decm. 1838/Mr. James Simpson/Dr Sir, I shall be in much in want of Money about the First Monday in January next you will oblige me very much by meeting me at Jonesborough on that day and settleing [sic] your Aje [sic] my family is in Unusual health I hope these lines will meet yours enjoying good health Respectfully William Moore".
