FEDERICO JIMENEZ FERNANDEZ (Madrid, 1841 - 1910). "Cat scene with hen and chicks." Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.

        Est: €4,000 - €5,000

FEDERICO JIMÉNEZ FERNÁNDEZ (Madrid, 1841 - 1910). "Scene of a cat with a hen and chicks". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measures: 86 x 120 cm; 95 x 129 cm (frame). Frequent in Federico Jiménez's painting were scenes of this type featuring animals, particularly birds, which the artist used to show human feelings and attitudes in which the animals were the protagonists. Thus, the complexity of this anthropomorphism allows us a double reading of the scene portrayed by the artist which inevitably refers to the fable. In this particular case, we can see a mother protecting her children from the stalk of a cat hiding behind a basket. This use of the hen protecting her chicks was common in Jiménez Fernández's work, as can be seen in the painting belonging to the Prado Museum collection entitled "A Mother with her Children" of 1885. Federico Jiménez Fernández studied at the San Fernando Special School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving in Madrid, where he was a pupil of Carlos de Haes. He then went to Paris with the aim of furthering his training. He specialised in painting domestic animals and poultry, a genre that was little developed in Spain, of which "The Judgement of Paris" and "Two Dead Hares and a Partridge" (Museo del Prado) are good examples. He also cultivated portraiture, particularly that of "Don Agustín Argüelles" (Ateneo de Madrid). He participated assiduously in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, receiving honourable mentions in 1858 and 1860, a third medal in 1862 for a canvas entitled "Un cuadro con caza muerta" ("A painting with dead game"), and decorations in the editions of 1878 and 1895. He was also awarded a silver medal at the International Exhibition in Bayonne in 1864, and the art medal at the Vienna Exhibition in 1873 for "Sálvese el que pueda" ("Save Yourself"), a work that was shown the following year at the Martínez Silver Exhibition and acquired by the Government for the Museum of Murcia. At the National Exhibition of 1878 he showed the works "Un tibor japonés, frutos y animales" ("A Japanese Shark, Fruits and Animals"), "Sobresalto de madre" ("Mother's Surprise") and "Una escena en la cocina" ("A Scene in the Kitchen"), works which were also included in the Universal Exhibition in Paris. At the National Exhibition of 1881 he also exhibited "El águila y el escarabajo" ("The Eagle and the Beetle"), "¿Entrará?" ("Will he come in?") and "Gallinero" ("Henhouse"), the latter of which earned him a commission from Charles III. His brother, José, was also an outstanding painter. Federico Jiménez Fernández is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Municipal Museums of Játiva and Málaga, the Nelson Zúmel Collection of the Provincial Museum of Lugo, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, the Ministries of Culture and Industry, the Spanish Embassies in London and Vienna, the City Council of La Coruña, the Museum of Zaragoza and the General Directorate of the Police in Madrid, as well as in various private collections.
