MANUEL JIMÉNEZ ARANDA (Seville, 1849-1904). No title. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 39 x 58 cm; 63 x 82 cm (frame). In this work, Manuel Jiménez depicts a costumbrista scene starring several characters. The costumbrismo of the 19th century is related, in a tangential way, with romanticism and literary realism. With remote antecedents in the realism of novelistic forms such as the picaresque, the emergence of costumbrismo is related to two crucial facts: the existence of a society in the process of transformation, where political revolts, disappointments and citizen passions are abundant; and the development of the newspaper, which allows to transmit in a more direct way. Its character as an independent and autonomous genre is underlined by the fact that its cultivators were conscious of writing something different from the novel. Critics have defined the formal and discursive elements of costumbrismo. In particular, the mediation that takes place between the message and the receiver through the figure of an omniscient narrator (who usually appears hidden behind a pseudonym) who is linked to the reader by a winking complicity based on belonging to the same system of cultural, spatial-temporal and moral coordinates. Manuel was the brother of the painters Luis Jiménez Aranda and José Jiménez Aranda. In 1874 he lived in Rome, where he painted a Group of Priests in the church of Asisse. In the Exhibitions held in Cadiz in 1879 and 1880 there were different works by this artist: in the first one "Echemos un cigarro" and "¿Cuándo llegaremos?" which were awarded a silver medal and acquired by Olegario de Castro; in the second one Roman peasant girl, A caza de bargains, Alegoría, La cuarentena and En la azotea. Manuel, who was a teacher at a school for the deaf and dumb, died in his hometown around September 1904.
