    Oil on canvas. Signed and dated (1963) in the lower left corner. A self-taught painter, she lived in San Sebastián in 1945, when she began to stand out on the art scene. Of Romani ethnicity, with a vast culture and a passion for flamenco, her painting is characterized by a very particular figuration and avant-garde abstraction that earned her recognition in the artistic circles of the time. The fact that she was a woman meant that she was not recognized as an artist of the "Basque art" movement, which was dominated by men. This fact, and her death at the age of 66, meant that she did not have the place she deserved in the history of art. The exhibition "Maria Paz Jiménez. Unveiling the Mystery" is currently being held in the Kubo room of the Kursaal in San Sebastián. (February 7 to May 18, 2025). Provenance: Enrique Múgica Herzog Collection
