    Mar. 07, 2025

Luis Jimenez Lithograph - "Cesar Chavez" (2008)

    Est: $900 - $1,350

Luis Jimenez (Mexican American, 1940-2006). "Cesar Chavez" lithograph on vellum paper, 2008. Printer's Proof edition 7 of 7. Titled with "P.P. 7/7," and artist's bind stamp beneath image. Published by Segura Publishing Company, Tempe, Arizona, USA. A powerful Printer's Proof lithograph by Luis Jimenez featuring the portrait of Cesar Chavez, an American labor leader and civil rights activist. Gazing forth from large, dark eyes, the famous radical opens his mouth as though to speak, his long hair wildly flowing around his evocative visage which boasts the rugged stubble of an unkept beard and bushy eyebrows. All is rendered in the Jimenez's energetic, flowing lines mixed with scribbled words in Spanish and English central to Chavez's life, such as strike, huelga, Deleno [sp], and justice, inscribed both forwards and backwards. Printed posthumously, this stirring portrayal is emblematic of Jimenez's talent for honoring the struggle of marginalized communities. Size of image: 21.75" W x 27.75" H (55.2 cm x 70.5 cm); of paper: 28" W x 34.5" H (71.1 cm x 87.6 cm) Luis Jimenez (1940-2006) was an influential Mexican American artist and sculptor known for his vibrant and dynamic fiberglass sculptures that celebrate and critique the cultural and social landscapes of the American Southwest. Born in El Paso, Texas, Jimenez drew inspiration from his Mexican heritage, the Chicano experience, and the traditions of folk art and muralism. His work often fused elements of pop culture, mythology, and political commentary, challenging viewers with its bold colors and provocative themes. Among his most famous works is Vaquero, a towering depiction of a Mexican cowboy that reflects both pride and complexity in cultural identity. Jimenez's art not only honored the struggles and contributions of marginalized communities but also served as a sharp critique of social inequalities, leaving a lasting legacy in public art and contemporary sculpture. One of his most iconic and controversial pieces is Blue Mustang, a 32-foot-tall, electric-blue fiberglass sculpture of a rearing horse with glowing red eyes, prominently displayed at Denver International Airport. Nicknamed "Blucifer" by locals, the sculpture evokes both awe and unease, embodying Jimenez's ability to challenge traditional notions of public art. Tragically, the piece became infamous for the accident during its creation, in which a section of the sculpture fell and fatally injured Jimenez. Despite the controversy, Blue Mustang remains a powerful symbol of Jimenez's bold artistic vision and his legacy of addressing themes of identity, mythology, and social critique in visually arresting ways. Provenance: private Bozeman, Montana, USA collection, acquired before 2015; consignor was co-owner of Segura Publishing Company, Tempe, Arizona and acquired this piece directly from Segura during his tenure All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
