  • Jia Haoyi, Ink and Color Painting,China, c. 1988
    Mar. 15, 2015

Jia Haoyi, Ink and Color Painting,China, c. 1988

    Est: $1,600 - $2,000

Paper, ink, color, wash China, circa 1988 Unframed Paper laid onto woven paper Inscription in the upper register Bearing signature and seals of the artist Sheet dimensions (height x width): 23 ¾ x 33 ½ in. (60.3 x 85.1 cm) Image dimensions (height x width): 18 x 26 ¾ in. (45.7 x 67.9 cm) This ink and color painting by Jia Haoyi features a loosely painted, abstract image of a seated man with calligraphy stretched above. This male figure echoes the inscription above him, having been rendered freehand by brush in long, seemingly imprecise strokes. However, in a matter of a few flourishes with his brush, Jia Haoyi creates a sense of depth and movement with his figure. It is this ability, cultivated over decades, that has made Jia Haoyi a well-respected artist. The painting is in very good condition with no visible flaws. The sheet size measures 23 ¾ x 33 ½ in. and the image size measure 18 x 26 ¾ in. (height x width). Provenance: Purchased by Ms. Helaine Ohayon and Ms. Amy Schwartz, directly from the artist at his studio in China in 1988. Ms. Ohayon and Ms. Schwartz purchased several paintings in Hong Kong and China during this time, in the process creating a contemporary Chinese paintings collection, The Mandarin Studio. The collection was subsequently exhibited at Harvard University in 1989, asNew Expressions: Contemporary Chinese Brush Paintings, 1984-1989, in theAdams House Modern Chinese Painting Exhibition Series. An exhibition introduction was written by Professor Wu Hung, at the time Assistant Professor of the Department of Fine Arts, Adams House, Harvard University. Please see supporting documents. Jia Haoyi (b. 1938) Well-known Chinese freehand ink and wash painter Jia Haoyi graduated from the Beijing Art Academy in 1961 where he was trained in traditional Chinese literati ink painting. He is currently a professional artist at the Beijing Art Institute and, in 1997, the Lao Jia Art Museum in Beijing officially opened, permanently exhibiting Jia Haoyi's work. Today, his works can be viewed in the collections of the National Art Museum of China, the National Museum of China and the Palace Museum.
