      CHI K'ANG (CHINESE 1913-2007) Lady under Blossoms, 1968 ink on paper laid on silk 41.5 x 74.5 cm (16 3/8 x 29 3/8 in.) signed, monogrammed and dated upper right PROVENANCE Collection of the Ambassador for the Republic of China, Mr. Hu Shi Xi thence by descent in the family Sold with an illustrated book of paintings by Chi K'ang, signed and dedicated by the artist to Ambassador Hu Shi Xi. LOT NOTES This lot comes from the collection of the prominent historical figure Ambassador Hu Shi Xi, dignitary from the Republic of China, and himself descending from an influential family of diplomats. His father, Hu Weide, was the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Qing Dynasty, and briefly served as the Premier of the Republic of China after Duan Qirui was ousted from Beijing in 1926. He was instrumental in bringing democracy to the Qing Dysnasty and was a member of the Chinese delegation at both the Treaty of Versailles as well as the Hague Peace Conference. Hu Shi Xi was a Chinese dignitary, the Chief Ambassador of the Republic of China in Canada, as well as an executive chief of embassies in many Spanish-speaking countries: Spain, Cuba, Argentina, Colombia, and others. In addition to his diplomatic skills, Hu Shi Xi was gifted artist, exhibiting his artworks at public exhibitions and diplomatic soirees to great acclaim. During his time posted in Europe and South America, he counted amongst his friends and visitors many other well known artists, such as Zhang Daqian. It should not be surprising, therefore, that Hu Shi Xi mainted autograph books with heartfelt calligraphic dedications, and even paintings, from both diplomats as well as the cultural community.

      A Chinese scroll painting of tiger. Ji, Kang (1911-2007). Depicting tiger climbing down the hill side scene. Signed and sealed l.l. Inscriptions u.l The scroll is laid down to a board, under clear plastic film. 57 1/4"h x 22"w. Note: The inscriptions in the upper left corner shows that this painting was previously owned by Zhang, Yaoming (1905-1972), who was the deputy commander of the Ninth Army National Revolutionary Army during WWII, and was the last president of the Republic of China Military Academy (Whampoa/ Huangpu Military Academy) in mainland China. The inscription states that Zhang gave this painting to his doctor Rudolf (?) as a thank you gift for curing his kidney stones. This inscription is also shown as written by Zhang. Condition: Toning, staining, tears and holes can be seen in the original painting. Laid down on board.
