BIOGRAPHY: William Smith Jewett, whose name is often confused with William Jewett, became a prominent American portrait painter during the mid-1800s. He was born in South Dover, New York in 1812, and was painting portraits there by 1833. Jewett studied at the National Academy of Design, enrolling in the Antique Class in 1838, and the following spring he began exhibiting portraits at the Academy's annual exhibitions. Although he is best known for portraiture, he occasionally painted landscapes as well including Yosemite National Park.Early in his career he was commissioned to paint the portrait of the governor of New York, which reinforced his position as a painter in the New York area.

Jewett / possessor / 1833" and stamped "Prepared by / Dechaux and Parmetier / New York;" unframed. 17 x 14 in. Note: Jewett, a New York native trained at the National Academy of Design. He launched his career as a portrait painter in New York, but after the Gold Rush began (1848) he headed to the West Coast and became the first resident professional artist in California.

      WILLIAM SMITH JEWETT (American 1812-1873) Romantic Encounter , 1848 Oil on canvas 36 x 29 inches (91.4 x 73.7 cm) Signed and dated lower left on a rock: W.S. Jewett N.Y. 1849 William Smith Jewett was born in South Dover, New Jersey. He moved to New York City as a young man and studied at the National Academy of Design. In 1845 he was elected an associate member. In 1849, at the height of the gold rush, he sailed from New York to San Francisco where he resided for years, enjoyed a painting career, and also prospected for gold. He died in Springfield, Massachusetts.
