BIOGRAPHY: William Smith Jewett, whose name is often confused with William Jewett, became a prominent American portrait painter during the mid-1800s. He was born in South Dover, New York in 1812, and was painting portraits there by 1833. Jewett studied at the National Academy of Design, enrolling in the Antique Class in 1838, and the following spring he began exhibiting portraits at the Academy's annual exhibitions. Although he is best known for portraiture, he occasionally painted landscapes as well including Yosemite National Park.Early in his career he was commissioned to paint the portrait of the governor of New York, which reinforced his position as a painter in the New York area.

    Samuel Waldo and William Jewett (American, 19th century), Portrait of George Bradish oil on panel, the verso stamped "Waldo & Jewett / 183(?) / New York," presented in a period gilt frame. Panel 31 x 26 in.; Frame dimensions 40 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. George Bradish was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 3, 1827. His parents were George Bradish and Lucretia Benjamin Bradish. They married in Staten Island, New York on December 17, 1814, before moving to Louisiana where Bradish was a successful planter and river pilot in Plaquemines Parish. George Bradish married Elizabeth Salter "Lizzie" Johnston on November 21, 1851. Shortly after their marriage, they purchased a large amount of land in Bayside, Long Island, New York. They had two children, George Johnston Bradish and Amy Bradish. During the Civil War, Bradish volunteered at the fort at Willet's Point, where he assisted with the care of wounded soldiers. Bradish died on May 7th, 1895 and is buried in Flushing Cemetery, Queens County, New York. Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.lelandlittle.com

He married Mary Whittemore, also of St. Albans, in 1828. They raised their five children in New York. Mary died in 1866. The portraits are likely a collaboration between Samuel Waldo and his student, William Jewett. In their partnership, Waldo was known to have painted the faces of their subjects, while Jewett painted the clothing and backgrounds.
