MAGDALENA JETELOVÁ 1946 - AN OPEN BOOK

    Est: -

The unique object called Opened Book is a very rare collector's example of the early work of the world-renowned Czech artist Magdalena Jetelová. After completing her studies at the Prague Academy, she clearly defined herself against the official scene by participating in several exhibitions. From the beginning, her works were close to landscape and land art, which became significant for her, especially after her emigration to Germany in 1985, where she still lives today. Her strength lies in her sensitivity to expanding space and her passion for the sculptural dimension of architecture. This distinctive handwriting can be read, for example, in the early wooden window objects created in the late 1970s. In the context of these works, the offered work Open Book can also be included, which allows two levels of view, two worlds - the external and the internal - to merge in an analogous way. The rich texture of the paper is juxtaposed with a working, subtly carved piece of wood, highlighted by a crack across the material. From 1990 to 2004 she taught at the State Academy of Art in Düsseldorf, and since 2004 she has been a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After the revolution, she was a consultant to the Prague Castle Council for three years, and in 1993 her installation was exhibited for the first time in the Czech Republic in the Belveder in Prague. The work comes from the important collection of Jiří Šetlík. Published: Šetlík, J., Vrba, T.: Jiří Šetlík: Provázejí mne životem. Muzeum umění a designu Benešov, 2019. str. 74 Signed: unsigned

    Magdalena Jetelová, Tischgespräch, 1985

    Est: €30,000 - €40,000

The sculpture is dismantled and stored in Cologne. For further information: Tel +49 221 925729-32 Magdalena Jetelová attained international recognition with her monumental wooden sculptures during the 1980s. In 1983, Water Storms showed her works for the first time in a group exhibition. In 1987 she was represented at documenta 8. The human dwelling and its furnishings were one of her key topics – stairs, chairs or tables that far exceed the human scale and that, divested of their actual function, seem to develop a life of their own. They consist of very roughly processed wooden elements, which makes them highly abstract. This is also the case with “Tischgespräch” [table talk] (the title of a sculpture from 1985), a massive table lying upside down. The row of wooden slats springing from the centre of the table allows the sculpture to reach out into the room. The artist’s goal is the reduction to the essential, not the ironic alienation. Nonetheless, her works always contain an element of absurdity. ‘A staircase that winds impassably across the floor before it rises and ends in a void, a huge chair that prepares to descend a staircase, a table lying on its back with its legs in the air for a “Tischgespräch” (the title of a sculpture from 1985) - this is really undeniably absurd. [...] But she allows such associations [...] only as the first step to comprehension. As the second step, the surrealists rise up for her, who likewise refer the viewer from apparent banality to a metaphysical reality.’ (Martin Tschechne: art, 1988, loc. cit., p.44f) In its archaic expressiveness, this significant work offers room for a variety of interpretations. Thus, the upturned table legs may well be interpreted as people in conversation. With “Tischgespräch”, a large-format sculpture by this artist is on offer here for auction.

Ohne Titel -- Mischtechnik auf dickem Velin. 1989. -- 54,3 x 37,4 cm. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

1975 115 x 86 cm (h x w) Screenprint on wood panel. Signed on reverse: "Magdalena Jetelova 1975". A first work by Magdalena Jetelová, created shortly after her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. The print reflects the artist’s entire future work. The view from a window – foreshadowing her Land Art projects – is connected with another fundamental area of her work, photography. Magdalena Jetelová studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1967-1968, then studied in Italy for two years and graduated from the Academy after her return(1971). In 1985 she emigrated to West Germany, where she continues to live today. In 1990 – 2004 she taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and since 2004 she has been a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After the Velvet Revolution she was a consultant for the Prague Castle Council. Her installation at Belvedere Summer Palace in 1993 marked the first time her work was exhibited to Czech audiences. Magdalena Jetelová is one of the most interesting and courageous artists of today. Her strength lies in her sensitivity to expanding space and passion for the sculptural dimension of architecture. Since the mid-1980s her work has been shown at many foreign institutions and at art shows, including the Tate Modern, the Biennale of Sydney, documenta 8 in Kassel, and at solo exhibitions at Riverside Studios in London and MoMA in New York. Starting price: 250 000 CZK (9 804 EUR)
