Instituts zu Berlin.". Date: c. 1840 Description: After a successful career as a civil servant in the Prussian administrative apparatus, Christian Peter Wilhelm Beuth reached the post of director of the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Building in 1830. Already active in this field for a long time, he was in contact with the Prussian master builder and town planner Karl Friedrich Schinkel at the beginning of the century and soon became one of his closest friends. Together they travelled to France and England on a royal commission from Frederick William III to study architecture, the decorative arts and economic processes, which were already more pronounced there than in the German-speaking countries. Like Schinkel, Beuth was instrumental in the development of Prussian trade in the industrial society of the 19th century and was involved in the founding of training institutes as well as a private association for the "promotion of trade in Prussia". Both ensured the dissemination of decorative art produced industrially and according to uniform designs, which was intended above all to satisfy the aesthetic needs of the emerging, affluent bourgeoisie. Beuth, who is shown here with his characteristic nickel glasses, made a name for himself above all as an administrative official and pioneer of Prussian arts and crafts and, as a close confidant of Schinkel, took over the administration of his estate and founded the Schinkel Museum in Berlin.
