    Richard Jennys (1734-1809)- portrait of Betty (Ferriss) Bostwick, ca. 1799. Oil on canvas, in period mahogany frame. H 23 in. W 19 in. A second portrait of Betty Ferriss Bostwick (1768-1834), by Richard Jennys, is illustrated, along with a portrait of her husband, Lieutenant Elisha Bostwick (1748-1834), in Frederic Fairchild Sherman’s: Richard Jennys New England Portrait Painter, 1941, page 56 and 57; and discussed in detail on pages 11-12. According to Sherman, “In Lieutenant Bostwick, Jennys found his most important sitter — a Revolutionary soldier who served throughout the war, wintered at Valley Forge, crossed the Delaware with Washington, (and) was a friend of Nathan Hale.”  Both portraits are in the collection of the New Milford, Connecticut Historical Society Museum, and are further discussed and illustrated in: Voices from the Past - A History as Told by The New Milford Historical Society’s portraits and Paintings, (Rachel D. Carley, ed.), 2000, p. 332.  Both volumes accompany this lot.  Condition: Split at bottom of frame repaired recently. Otherwise very good.
