MAINIE JELLETT (IRISH 1897-1944) Property of a Private Collection MAINIE JELLETT (IRISH 1897-1944) Composition gouache 23 x 18 cm PROVENANCE: European Modern Art, Dublin, 1991 Sale, Sotheby's, London, 23rd November 2006, lot 217 Private Collection, London Mainie Jellett was an Irish artist born in 1897. She was a pioneering figure in the development of abstract art in Ireland and was one of the founders of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Jellett's work was heavily influenced by the work of Kazimir Malevich, who was one of the pioneers of abstract art. She was particularly interested in his use of geometric shapes and the way in which he used colour to create a sense of depth and movement in his paintings. Her use of geometric shapes and bold colours has been particularly influential in shaping the aesthetic of modern abstract art. Jellett was deeply religious, and her works often reflect a religious element or iconography. The presents works (Lots 22 and 23) may be an abstract head of Christ. Her religious beliefs helped her to weather criticism of her oeuvre in a country that was more used to representational art; conversely, the religious undertones helped to win people over and she is now recognised as a champion of the modern movement in Ireland.

          Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) ABSTRACT COMPOSITION

          Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) ABSTRACT COMPOSITION gouache h:18  w:15.50 in. An abstract and figure painter, Jellett started to take watercolour lessons as a young girl, later working under Sarah Cecilia Harrison and May Manning. She entered the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in 1914 while William Orpen was teaching there. Three years later she went to study at the Westminster Art School in London with Walter Sickert. It was there that she met Evie Hone who became a lifelong friend. In 1920 she won the Taylor Scholarship and this money allowed her to travel to Paris with Hone, where they worked in André Lhote's studio. Here they had their first taste of Cubism, however, after a while they both decided to move into the realm of pure abstract painting and transferred to work with Albert Gleizes. On her return to Ireland, Jellett continued to visit him during the summer for the next ten years. In Dublin she gave painting lessons from her home and began to exhibit her cubist paintings, which received hostile criticism from George Russell. During the 1920s she exhibited regularly at the Dublin Painter's Gallery while also showing at several exhibitions in Paris. Her art developed a greater realism in the 1930s and also became more religious in subject matter. She exhibited at the RHA from 1930 to 1937 while at the same time contributing to the Watercolour Society of Ireland until 1943. She became a leader in the modern movement in Ireland and joined the avant-garde group of painters, the White Stag, in 1940, regularly lecturing and exhibiting with them. She exhibited in the first ever Irish Exhibition of Living Art, where she had been appointed chairman but was unable to attend as she fell ill and died a short time later. Her works are in all the major Irish collections. For another example by Mainie Jellett see lot 31.

        • Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) COMPOSITION, 1936
          Nov. 28, 2022

          Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) COMPOSITION, 1936

          Est: €25,000 - €35,000

Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) COMPOSITION, 1936 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right; signed and titled on reverse h:38  w:32 in. Composition 1936 was executed thirteen years after Mainie Jellett first exposed art audiences in Ireland to abstraction at the Society of Dublin Painters exhibition in autumn of 1923. It was widely condemned by critics at that time. This sizable oil on canvas example is characteristic of her style in the 1930s when she had moved away from the pure abstraction of the 1920s towards the semi-abstract figurative style seen here. Although the title does not indicate a religious subject matter, elements of the composition - the central figure/s flanked harmoniously upper left and right by similar shapes and radiating line and colour - echo themes such as the crucifixion or the Madonna and child. Jellett and her friend, fellow artist Evie Hone, were both deeply religious people and the inclusion of this very familiar narrative in their oeuvre aided Irish audiences in their interpretation of this new visual language. By the end of the 1930s Jellett and her contemporaries had succeeded in making Modernism not only palatable to Irish audiences but relevant to the establishment which, under Éamon de Valera, understood the importance of being seen to be 'Modern'. In 1938 Jellett's work was selected to decorate the Irish Pavilion at the Glasgow World Fair and the following year in New York alongside Hone. Composition 1936 was painted just before this watershed moment in Jellet's career and in Irish art history. Adelle Hughes, November 2022 For another example by Mainie Jellett and a concise biography see lot 32.

McWilliam Gallery & Studion, Banbridge.Literature: Albert Gleize's book on Cubism, illustrated; 'Analysing Cubism', IMMA 2013, Dublin, Cork and Banbridge, illustrated p.55 & 116.Mainie Jellett is a towering figure in the history of Irish art. She is acknowledged as the first native artist to exhibit pure abstraction in Ireland and for two decades, from 1923 to her premature death in January 1944, she was as Bruce Arnold has written, ‘the acknowledged leader of the modern art movement in Ireland’ (1). Patrick Murphy’s interest in Jellett began in 1964 when he bought a small watercolour landscape from an auction at Adams. Although the work was signed and dated 1921, it had been catalogued simply as ‘Irish watercolour’ and so Murphy, who was the only bidder, got a bargain! (2)Born in Dublin into a prominent Protestant family of Huguenot descent, Jellett took art lessons with Sarah Cecilia Harrison and May Manning before enrolling at Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in 1914 where she was taught by William Orpen. She later studied under Walter Sickert at Westminster Art School in London and it was there that Jellett met fellow Dubliner, Evie Hone, who was to become her life-long friend and collaborator. In 1920 Jellett was awarded the Taylor Scholarship which enabled her to travel to Paris, then the centre of the art world. Hone was already in Paris and working in the studio of the Cubist André Lhote. Jellett joined her and together they learnt from Lhote how to abstract from nature while always maintaining an element of representation. After a period with Lhote, Hone and Jellett decided that they wanted to move further towards truly non-representational art. They approached the Cubist Albert Gleizes and asked if they could study with him. Gleizes did not take pupils but Jellett and Hone convinced him to make an exception. Thus began a long and fruitful collaboration between Gleizes, Jellett and Hone through which they explored both abstraction and the expression of spirituality through art. Despite the political and social turbulence that was engulfing Ireland during this period, Jellett decided to return to Dublin and introduce Irish audiences to abstraction. In pursing this goal, Jellett became both the greatest advocate of modernism in Ireland, and the prime target for those forces that rallied against it.In the autumn of 1923, Irish audiences were exposed to abstraction for the first time when Jellett exhibited a small abstract composition titled Decoration in the Society of Dublin Painters exhibition. The critical response to Decoration in 1923 reveals the hostility towards modernism in Ireland. While the Irish Times compared the painting to a malformed onion (3), utilising language reminiscent of continental attacks on modernism, the artist George Russell, described Jellett as ‘a late victim to Cubism in some sub-section of this artistic malaria’ (4).Despite Russell’s criticism, Jellett continued to paint and exhibit abstract works, including Composition with Three Elements. This accomplished work demonstrates, in both scale and ambition, the confidence that Jellett had in her ability to produce fully resolved abstract compositions. Bruce Arnold illustrates this work in his monograph on Jellett under the title Abstract Composition and notes that Albert Gleizes also illustrated it in his book Kubismus in 1928 ‘to demonstrate the third Stage of Cubism (Epic Cubism)’ (5). The palette of grey, green, blue, ochre, brown and pink is distinctly Art Deco, the design movement also known as Art Moderne, which was fashionable in France and throughout Western Europe during the 1920s and 1930s. Composition with Three Elements, represents the zenith of Jellett’s experiments with pure abstraction. By 1928, she had begun to reintroduce figuration into her cubist work and in paintings such as Homage to Fra Angelico (1928) explicit references to both art history and Christian iconography are present. This return to representation aided the reception of Jellett’s art by the Irish public but also signalled the end of her avant-garde pursuit of pure abstraction. Mainie Jellett (1897-1944)Abstract CompositionOil on canvas, 91 x 71cm (35¾ x 28'')Signed and dated 1925Abstract Composition belongs to the early pioneering years of Jellett’s engagement with abstraction. In 1923 she exhibited her newly devised abstract paintings at the Society of Dublin Painters where they were greeted by much controversy. They were the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland. The interlocking forms, as in Abstract Composition, are indebted to cubism which Jellett learned of in Paris in 1920-21 with André Lhote, a distinguished painter and teacher. In 1921 she and Evie Hone worked in the studio of Albert Gleizes, whose ideas were very influential on her subsequent work. While there Gleizes was perfecting his technique of translation-rotation, a method of making abstract art using the dynamic forms of cubism. As described in Gleizes’s 1923 book, La Peinture et ses Lois the artist begins with the basic outline of the canvas and paints its surface in one colour, proceeding to select colours and shapes which echo this form. This is the static element of translation. In rotation, the cubist element, the artist rotates these basic forms to create a dynamic composition which introduces the idea of time and movement. One of the main purposes behind the aesthetic was to create an art which was enduring in its use of pictorial rules.A complex interaction between geometric and organic forms is built up in Abstract Composition. At its centre an interlocking motif made of black, gold and orange contrasts with the cold blue and purple tones that dominate the rest of the painting. This form has a torch like quality and at its apex a halo of flame-like forms. The overlapping and interlocking forms of the painting create the notion of movement that was so central to Gleizes’s ideas on abstract art. Small rhythmic elements like the black patterning in the right-hand background and the purple stripes in the centre enrich the larger elements of the painting and introduce different levels of dynamism across its surface. Unlike Jellett’s later post 1927 cubist compositions Abstract Composition does not compromise with representational form. Remaining non-objective, it is an unequivocal statement in the new language of modern art. Jellett’s intention in creating such experimental works was to make art that could be universally accessible and spiritual in its evocation of pure form and colour.Dr Róisín KennedyMay 2018
