Europe, England, London, Charles Henry Jeens (English, 1827-1879) and Lumb Stocks (English, 1812-1892) after John Bagnold (J. B.) Burgess (English, 1829-1897) "Stolen by Gipsies" (1868). Published by Art Union of London, 1875. An etching and engraving on chine colle depicting a playful scene. The British Museum has a copy of this print and describes it as follows, "Simple interior, a little girl holding a tambourine and looking solemnly at a gypsy who stands on the left, playing a guitar and teasing her to make her dance, while another snaps his fingers and taps his toes; others are gathered near a table on the right, some playing cards, a mother nursing a child; two soldiers spy on the scene from the top of the stairs in upper left." A wonderful example custom framed in an ornate gold-hued wood frame under glass. Size: 16" L x 23.75" W (40.6 cm x 60.3 cm); framed 24.75" L x 32.75" W (62.9 cm x 83.2 cm) J.B. Burgess was born in Chelsea, London, began his career as a portrait painter, and became known for his historical and genre scenes before travelling to Spain. Seventy-three of his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1850 to 1897, fifteen at the British Institution, and dozens more at other institutions.
