Jebens 1888, 97 x 118 cm Über die Jugendtage des 1819 im damals preussischen Elbing geborene Adolf Jebens ist wenig bekannt. Ab 1832 besuchte er das Cöllnische Gymnasium in Berlin und studierte im Anschluss an der Königlich Preußischen Akademie der Künste. Die junge Generation suchte in den 1840er Jahren nach einer neuen Lebendigkeit und Ausdrucksstärke der Ölmalerei, die sie nicht mehr in Deutschland - die Malerei wurde als angestrengt theatralisch kritisiert -, aber dafür in Paris fand. In den Jahren 1839-1840 hielt sich auch Jebens in Paris auf und wurde von Paul Delaroche unterrichtet. Jebens setzte sich als Porträtist durch, und er unternahm in den kommenden Jahren Studienreisen nach Rom, Paris und Berlin. Warschau und Danzig waren ebenso Stationen seinen Schaffens; der Künstler machte sich als Porträtist der Danziger Gesellschaft einen Namen. Ab 1846 war Adolf Jebens in St. Petersburg nicht nur als Porträtmaler, sondern auch als Lehrer der Malerei tätig. Ab 1864 ließ er sich in Berlin nieder. Das hier angebotene Werk "Edelfräulein am Spinnrad" verbindet die Genremalerei mit dem Porträt in eindrucksvoller Weise, so schaut die Dargestellte dem Betrachter direkt in die Augen und erweckt den Anschein, dass sie mit der Ankunft der Gestalt im Hintergrund bereits gerechnet hat.

This painting was painted with oil on a paper mache board plaque, which was previously gilded with white gold; rear sides were all hand painted as well. Mounted in an ornate Russian double eagle carved wooden frame. Signed to lower right thus why we attribute this piece to A. Jebens. Frame measures: 24-1/4" Wide x 24-1/2" Tall. He studied from 1839-40 at the local Academy as well as at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris under Paul Delaroche, followed by study trips to Italy and Danzig. Around 1950 he teaches painting at the art school of the society for the promotion of the arts in St. Petersburg. In 1864 he settled in Berlin, where he became a member of the Association of Berlin Artists and was represented regularly within the Academy exhibitions.
