        Jon Jaylo (b. 1975) - Requiem

        Est: ₱400,000 - ₱520,000

Requiem signed and dated 2009 (lower right) oil on canvas 36" x 36" (91 cm x 91 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot Surrealist Jon Jaylo primarily credits his dreams for his peculiar oeuvre. “I derive most of my artistic concepts from personal experiences and stories of the people who are close to me,” he said in a 2023 interview at Basic Magazine. “Almost all of my concepts come from my dreams, personal experiences and sometimes themes that currently surround us,” he added in a 2021 interview with Beautiful Bizarre Magazine. The dreamlike quality of his work is evident in his 2009 Requiem. At first glance, nothing seems out of order. A woman stands in a dark, empty field with an abandoned piano behind her. She hugs herself solemnly, her eyes closed as she rests her head on her shoulders. However, look closely and something is amiss. Like a dream that seems normal except for one peculiar element, the woman in Jaylo’s Requiem sports on her back a small pair of angel wings. It is bizarre and almost nonsensical like most dreams are but Jaylo seamlessly blends it into reality, making the impossible look possible. The surreal meets the ordinary in his world with frequent references from the subconscious that may not be immediately noticeable to first-time viewers. In a way, his works are a visual diary of his dreams, an incredibly personal project to undertake. Requiem, literally referring to the mass for the dead, is reminiscent of the bizarre dreams that leave us melancholic at the end. The cryptic symbolism is a maze we cannot decipher and yet, the emotions elicited are just as if it was real. Jaylo excels at prodding this crossroad; he plays at parallel dream worlds with one foot into the real and another into the surreal. (Hannah Valiente)

Jon Jaylo (b. 1975) The Trouble With Your So-Called Love signed and dated 2014 (lower right) oil on canvas 42" x 30" (107 cm x 76 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot Known for depicting social ills through the hyperactive lens of social surrealism, contemporary artist Jon Jaylo creates highly important art that seeks social change and progress through unapologetic symbolism. Jaylo’s unique style arguably creates a unique brand of unrealism that plays on the subconscious anxiety and moral dispositions of the human psyche. By doing so, he effectively pulls back the semiotic layers of everyday life to reveal familiar yet unrealized truths. His works also revel in psychological and philosophical motifs, prompting an in-depth mental and spiritual investigation.

Jon Jaylo (b. 1975) - Walking on Water

        Est: ₱180,000 - ₱234,000

Walking on Water signed and dated 2013 (lower right) oil on canvas with frame: 31 1/2" x 26 1/2" (80 cm x 67 cm) Flower Pepper Gallery, Pasadena, California Flower Pepper Gallery, Mad Hatters, Pasadena, November 23, 2013 - January 24, 2014 Jon Jaylo’s oeuvre serves as his visual diary. His works cut across an often-melodramatic thread of surreal narratives synthesized with conscious introspection that, when carefully examined, becomes a mirror to his entrenched thoughts. In this piece, Jaylo depicts a boy smilingly playing the violin. He is shown seated on an anthropomorphic “four-legged” hat. It is as if the hat has a life of its own. It is “walking on water,” seemingly transporting the boy through the vast expanse. Figuratively, to “walk on water” is to perform an impossible task or venture into the extraordinary. This piece symbolically alludes to the difficulty of traversing the road towards achieving one’s goals and ambitions. However, the boy’s facial expression in this work represents resilience amid hardships, with the hat representing his support system. With this work, Jaylo espouses the old adage “no man is an island.” The artist conveys to the viewer that no one is ever wholly reliant on himself. At a particular point, every human has to rely on the company and comfort of others to advance and overcome a world filled with adversities.

        Jon Jaylo (b. 1975) - Illusion de L’éternité

        Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

Jon Jaylo (b. 1975) Illusion de L’éternité signed and dated 2014 (lower right) oil on canvas 42” x 31” (107 cm x 79 cm)   WRITE UP: Looking at New York-based Filipino surrealist Jon Jaylo’s works is experiencing a sublime dream world. Inspired by dreams, everyday scenes, firsthand experiences, poetry, and other people’s stories, Jaylo translates surreal dreams and ideas into thought-provoking, often philosophical images in the canvas. His whimsical works, varying in style and theatrical configuration of forms, are full of symbolisms and infused with personal observations. This 2014 Illusion de L’éternité (Illusion of Eternity) taps into the viewer’s subconscious with its powerful imagery. It is a reflective visual impression of the concept of eternity which humankind continuously grapples with as it faces mortality as a fact of life, as if conveying that to have a drink at life is to come into terms with one’s limited time of existence. Rene Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Gustav Klimt, Frida Kahlo, and Salvador Dali are some of the well-known artists who influenced his craft. His works have been displayed in galleries in the country and abroad such as the West Gallery and Ayala Museum, Philippines; Strychnin Gallery, Berlin; Primo Marella in Italy; and the Distinction Gallery and California Center for the Arts, USA.

Jon Jaylo (b.1975) The Value of Life

        Est: ₱1,500,000 - ₱1,950,000

Jon Jaylo (b.1975) The Value of Life signed and dated 2013 (lower right) oil on canvas painting: 71 1/4” x 48” (181 cm x 122 cm) table: H: 29” x D: 31 1/2” (74 cm x 80 cm) chairs: H: 42” x L: 21 1/4” x W: 19 1/4” (107 cm x 54 cm x 49 cm) A master orchestrator of all things surreal, Jon Jaylo has created works in the hyperrealist vein that blend the mundane with the magical. His paintings transport the viewer to places unknown and, in the process, discovery nuggets of truth about the human condition. Such is evident in this work, The Value of Life, that combines wonder, adventure, music, and time’s passage. Smiling at the viewer is a child that appears to be the personification of time. A clock adorns his tall magician’s hat as he holds an hour glass in which a gold fish swims and is inscribed with “Alpha” and “Omega” — the beginning and the end. As water rushes through this ornate contraption, the journey of life transpires, from the hot air balloons floating at different altitudes to the notes streaming their music in the atmosphere. This is what the “value of life” as alluded to by the title means: the ability to soar to great heights, find adventure in every turn, and enjoy the music that being human brings, before time runs out.
