Geraldine Javier (b. 1970) - Sometimes The Details Get Fuzzy

    Est: ₱800,000 - ₱1,040,000

Geraldine Javier (b. 1970) Sometimes The Details Get Fuzzy signed and dated 2006 (lower left and verso) oil on canvas 72" x 48" (183 cm x 122 cm)   Provenance: Acquired from Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur in 2006.   Exhibited: Valentine Willie Fine Art, Geraldine Javier: Plaster Saints, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June - July 2006. Geraldine Javier’s works have long been known for their quiet intensity, their ability to draw you in with beauty while leaving you unsettled in ways that linger. Sometimes the Details Get Fuzzy is no exception. At first glance, the painting presents an almost dreamlike scene—soft, muted tones, delicate textures, and a figure that seems both present and dissolving before our eyes. But the more you look, the stranger it becomes. The subject, a doll-like figure with jointed limbs and a head that fades into nothingness, seems trapped between worlds. Part of her melts into floral wallpaper, her body caught in a state of partial disappearance, as if memory itself is erasing her piece by piece.   Javier has always had a way of turning materials into metaphors, and this work speaks volumes about the fragility of identity and memory. The faceless figure suggests a loss of self, a distortion of identity over time. Is she being absorbed into her surroundings, or is she breaking free from them? The way her clothes hang loosely, the way her limbs remain unfinished or cut off, all hint at something left unresolved. There’s an eerie stillness here, like a childhood memory that refuses to stay intact, its details growing fuzzier with time.   The painting also plays with contrasts—softness and rigidity, realism and surrealism, presence and absence. The careful rendering of fabric and skin feels almost tangible, yet the way the figure vanishes into the wallpaper reminds us of how easily things slip away. Javier’s technique, likely influenced by her conceptual art training under Roberto Chabet, leans toward the intellectual, yet the emotional weight of this piece is undeniable. It doesn’t just ask to be analyzed; it asks to be felt (Jed Daya)

    Geraldine Javier (b. 1970) - Birdwatching

    Est: ₱1,200,000 - ₱1,560,000

Geraldine Javier (b. 1970) Birdwatching dated 2006 oil on canvas, fabric, embroidery, and stufffing a.) 36" x 71" (91.5 cm x 181.5 cm) b.) 11 3/4" x 11 3/4" (30 cm x 30 cm)   Accompanied by a certificate issued by Valentine Willie Fine Art and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot   Provenance: Acquired from Valentine Willie Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur in 2007   Exhibited: Valentine Wille Fine Art, Headlights 2007, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Geraldine Javier’s works often invite viewers to look beyond the surface—to linger, to question, to feel a quiet tension simmering beneath their refined beauty. Birdwatching is no exception. At first, it presents itself as an image of luxury: a richly upholstered, antique-style chaise lounge, plush with velvet cushions that seem to invite rest and indulgence. But something is off. The longer you stare, the more you realize that comfort is merely a façade. The shadows in the folds of the cushions seem to shift, forming eerie, indistinct shapes—almost like faces lurking beneath the fabric, watching in silence.   Then, there’s the small inset image in the upper right corner—a stark black silhouette of a bird perched on a flowering branch, set against delicate, patterned wallpaper. It feels detached, almost like an afterthought or a clue in a larger mystery. The contrast between the bird’s stark simplicity and the rich realism of the couch suggests a shift in perspective. Who is truly watching whom? Is this an image of leisure, or does it speak of unseen forces and silent observers?   Javier is known for layering materiality with metaphor, and this piece is no exception. The couch, typically a symbol of comfort and privilege, feels weighted with an eerie presence. It might symbolize memory—impressions left behind, ghosts of past conversations, or even the idea that objects carry histories of those who have used them. The bird, a common symbol of freedom, is frozen, framed, and confined within a decorative element. This subtle juxtaposition between freedom and entrapment, visibility and absence, makes the work more than just a still life—it becomes a meditation on what is seen and unseen, what is present and what lingers in absence. Geraldine Javier (b. 1970) - The Healer

    Est: ₱800,000 - ₱1,040,000

The Healer dated 2009 mixed media 36" x 48" (91 cm x 122 cm) Geraldine Javier The Quintessential Filipino Iconoclast by MILO SOGUECO Years ago, I had the rare privilege of acquiring a painting by Geraldine Javier, one of the most promising young artists in the Philippines. Known for her hauntingly evocative works, Geraldine quickly became a standout figure in the art world, with collectors eagerly seeking her pieces. To count myself among those who own one of her works felt like an honor I hadn’t quite expected but deeply appreciated. I first encountered her art in the galleries of Mega Mall, where some of the country’s most respected spaces—Finale, West Gallery, and more—gathered to showcase the best in Filipino artistry. Wandering through the exhibits, her work stopped me in my tracks. Here was a Filipina painter with a vision so powerful it felt universal. After months of admiring her work (and, admittedly, a little gentle stalking), we became friends. Eventually, Geraldine offered me a piece that felt deeply personal: The Healer, her reimagining of the mythic figure of Medea. The Healer is both a striking and enigmatic piece. In it, Medea gazes out with an expression that seems to hold the weight of her choices—a look that is equal parts strength and vulnerability. She’s draped in earthy, muted tones, but beneath the image lies a base of bright florals, contrasting life’s softness with its inevitable hardships. Geraldine’s Medea captures the essence of resilience and transformation, qualities I found myself needing at that point in my life, as I too was a struggling artist, searching for my path forward. For years, The Healer has held a place of honor in my foyer, greeting every visitor who walks through my door. With her steady gaze and timeless presence, she both welcomes and unsettles—sometimes delighting guests, sometimes scaring the young ones. But to me, she has been a quiet guardian and a source of inspiration, a reminder of my own resilience during moments of doubt. She’s the first to greet me when I come home and the last to see me off when I leave, a silent witness to my journey. Now, as I prepare to part with The Healer, I feel a bittersweet pull. This painting has been with me through so much, a talisman of strength that has inspired me year after year. Yet letting go is sometimes necessary, and this auction will help me build a new dream, a new home. I hope her next owner finds the same spark in her, the same reminder of healing and resilience, as I did. May she continue to be a symbol of transformation, quietly offering strength to all who encounter her.

Geraldine Javier (b. 1970) - Odd Sights, Strange Sounds

    Est: ₱3,000,000 - ₱3,900,000

Odd Sights, Strange Sounds dated 2008 oil on canvas 72" x 96" (183 cm x 244 cm) PROVENANCE: Primo Marella Gallery, Milan Acquired directly from the artist EXHIBITED: Primo Marella Gallery, South East B(l)ooming, Milan, Italy, February 10 - April 2, 2009 WRITE UP: A common thread amongst the works of Filipina contemporary artist Gerladine Javier is their ability to draw you in through use of uncanny yet subtle ways. Her pieces look and feel they are suspended between reality and the illusory, bringing to light an almost metaphorical existence within what is perceived to be mundane. Her works are imbued with a sense of profundity, given that Javier herself often focuses on the conceptual aspect of her work rather than any sort of emotional response. In this piece we are let in a room of sorts whose walls are decorated with head mounts, and whose floor is overgrown with wildgrass. Upon first glance, viewers of her work are already thrust upon the surreality of Javier’s works. The use of taxidermy as a visual device is nothing new. Javier’s work draws similarities to another notable female artist; Georgia O'Keeffe. In O’Keeffe’s skull series we are presented with her fascination with the natural forms of skulls, particularly those of animals found in the desert landscape of New Mexico. O'Keeffe worked with various mediums that depicted the remains of different animals, including oil on canvas and pastels. The choice of medium allowed her to experiment with different textures and color palettes, further enhancing the expressive qualities of her representations. The series reflects a deep connection to the environment that surrounded her and a contemplative approach to the cycles of life and death. In a similar fashion, Javier presents with a new way of seeing things originally thought to be taboo. Here we see ourselves in an in-between. A space where life and death, the primal and the modern, man and nature, exist in a sort of juxtaposition with each other. Yet their opposition is not hostile. Instead, this surreal coming-together of objects and symbols can be read as a descriptive stance on the current state of affairs, wherein no matter how many divisions we draw amongst ourselves, in the end everything will once again collide and coalesce with each other. Her synthesis of both material and metaphorical content into her work is often attributed to the formal training she received from Roberto Chabet, the Father of Philippine Conceptual Art, when she was a student at the University of the Philippines’ College of Fine Arts. Thus, her works are often described as art that prioritizes intellectual and genuine engagement over immediate emotional response.

    Geraldine Javier (b. 1970) - All - Seeing

    Est: ₱700,000 - ₱910,000

Geraldine Javier (b. 1970) All - Seeing signed and dated 2005 (lower right and verso) oil on canvas 60" x 48" (152 cm x 122 cm) Concepts related to faith and religion have featured prominently in Geraldine Javier’s oeuvre. Such is the case with this particular piece titled All-Seeing, where the artist subverts the supposed divinity of God. In her formative years, Javier became deeply exposed to the rudiments of the Catholic faith. This work is representative of Javier’s art from the mid-2000s that questions the Church’s longheld dogmas and teachings. Through these works, Javier critically examines the importance and role of religion in a world that has remarkably veered away from the sacred since the Age of Enlightenment. The work’s title is a double entendre on the notion of God’s omniscience—his infinite awareness and insight. In this piece, Javier depicts God as a towering uncanny figure whose hands resemble the Salvatore Mundi pose. Instead of the right hand raised in blessing, it is directed below, seemingly targeting the mortal domain and implying callousness. His face denotes an evil grin, like a frightening clown that has constantly disturbed our wild imaginations as a child. Behind him is a sinister background, in contrast to the glorious depiction of the heavens in traditional art. The man’s character leads us to question God’s supposed omniscience: As an allknowing being, does God delight in witnessing humanity suffer? Does he possess an egotistical character, reveling in knowing the fact that the more we suffer, the more we unceasingly plead to him? Did God give us free will only to let us suffer the consequences of having such? (A.M.)

Her collages challenge us to confront and answer the question, “What is the self.” Javier creates patchwork stills of floral prints juxtaposed with religious icons, grids, random numbers, and paper in various lengths and shapes. In several of her collages, the artist binds the images together with small strips of colored tape that are not brought into obscurity by the primary image; they are integrated into the entirety of the collage. The word ‘collage’ has its roots in the French word ‘coller’ that means ‘to glue.’ With this, Javier affirms the coherence of our identities by employing colored tapes as visible art. It is this gesture of consolidating things into a whole that makes Javier’s collages in a league of their own. She ensures the unity of each component, establishing harmony within our fragmented selves. Javier explores and recognizes the human need to create meaning even from the most mundane of things. In Geraldine Javier: Fictions, this pertains to “an intention that begins and ends with the self – evasive but sure of its assignations and small devotions.” Javier situates the self into a seemingly disintegrated collage: jarring yet an endless feast for searching meanings

Geraldine Javier (b. 1973) - Half Finished People Series - Case 3 of a Man

    Est: ₱1,000,000 - ₱1,300,000

Geraldine Javier (b. 1973) Half Finished People Series - Case 3 of a Man signed and dated 2006 (lower right) oil on canvas As an artist, Geraldine Javier sought to break away from her generation’s overarching hegemonic canon that was dominated by the works of Social Realists and Traditionalists. Thus, in her pursuit of groundbreaking and novel forms of expression, Javier is now regarded as one of the pioneering voices of the contemporary Filipino art scene. Her macabre works are imbued with a sense of profundity, given that Javier herself often focuses on the conceptual aspect of her work rather than any sort of emotional response. To properly view Javier works is to internalize its subject matter through quiet reflection. In this piece entitled Half Finished People Series - Case 3 of a Man, one is immediately drawn to a lingering sense of loss and dread; as if though something is amiss. From there, we are directed to various parts of the piece, from the surface of the couch to the austere painting on the wall and the clothes on the figure’s back. Each part feels palpable and real, evoking a sense of history and narrativity in every nook and cranny. Though the inherent message of the piece is entirely up to the viewer’s interpretation and connection to it. What Javier presents us is a fragmented passage whose completion is entirely dependent on our own relationship to it. Estimate in USD $20000-$26000

Geraldine Javier belongs to a new generation of Filipino artists who have moved away from the social realist predilections of their forebears in favor of a much more intimate and idiosyncratic approach. Javier's works are charged with tension and provocation, combining modern sophistication with urban sensibilities. Her subjects often include religious iconography and urban middle-class spaces that exhibit decay, dysfunction, and emotional violence. Doing so grounds the unfamiliar in the familiar, inviting the viewer into a state of deep contemplation and analysis. In this triptych, Javier utilizes images of space and texture within a familiar world to convey a literary-esque structure. By starting from a space within the mind, the triptych mirrors the outward movement of the human psyche. Starting from the purely psychological, Javier condenses the abstract into a seemingly lived moment in space and time. This effectively weaves the subjective context of the work into the fabric of the universal condition.

Blood is a symbol of the life force-- its presence a force of vitality. Geraldine Javier treads this confluence meanings, using red embroidered cloth to convey an air of sacred power, a carnal energy that works within.
