Beginning of 20th century. Canvas. oil. 84.5x121 cm Janis Jaunsudrabins (1877–1962) Writer and painter. One of the founders of the illustration principles of Latvian children’s books. Also. one of the pioneers of art theory and criticism in Latvian culture. His interest in fine arts became evident at the end of 1890s. From 1899 until 1904 he studied at V. Blūms’ Art School in Riga. simultaneously improving his skills at Janis Rozentāls’ studio.  In 1905. he studied in Munich for three months. and held his first exhibition after returning. In 1907. he seriously turned to writing but continued painting too. In 1908. he went to Germany again. to Berlin. where he studied under the direction of Lovis Corinth until 1909. During World War I. he lived in the Caucasus. which is believed to be where he created the painting up for auction. It is an academically realistic studio type landscape in a muted colour palette typical to Jaunsudrabiņš. At that time Jaunsudrabiņš painted a lot of local landscapes and held four exhibitions of his works. In 1919. he was one of the founders of the Independent Artists’ Union and its first chairman. He regularly participated in the most significant Latvian art exhibitions. His solo exhibitions in Riga took place in 1921 and 1927. In 1944. he emigrated to Germany. Münster Latvian Gymnasium and Riekstiņi in Nereta Rural Territory house J. Jaunsudrabiņš’ memorial museums.
