Note: Lebbeus Chapman (1785–1864), merchant and accountant, was born in Middlesex County, Connecticut. By 1808 he was partner in a New York City mercantile firm, and he was listed in that city’s directories successively as grocer, 1809–10, merchant, 1811–16, auctioneer, 1817–18, accountant, 1822, and secretary of insurance companies, 1825–34 and 1842–47. He was the author of a seminal work on calculating interest: Tables of Interest and Discount, calculated on the only true principle of 365 Days to the Year; and compared with the erroneous method now in use (NY, 1820), later revised and expanded as Chapman’s Tables of Interest, calculated according to equitable and legal principles, at the rate of six per cent. per annum;… (NY: 1821).

Note: Born in England in 1781, John Wesley Jarvis’ family moved and settled in Philadelphia in the mid-1780’s. Around 1796 he started an apprenticeship under Edward Savage and moved with Savage to New York in 1801. A year later Jarvis set out on his own as an engraver and miniature and portrait painter, eventually becoming the leading portraitist in New York City between 1800 and 1820. Though he considered his home to be New York, Jarvis traveled and had extended residencies in Charleston, Baltimore, and New Orleans among other cities. At the peak of his success in 1814, he was commissioned to paint a series of portraits of military heroes from the War of 1812 for New York City Hall, a job he took over from Gilbert Stuart after Stuart had disagreements with the patrons of the project. Jarvis was known for his ostentatious style, consumption of alcohol and recklessness with his finances. In the early 1820’s he suffered a debilitating stroke while in New Orleans that left him partially paralyzed, and he spent the remainder of his life with his widowed sister Elizabeth Jarvis Child (1782-1830) in New York until he died in 1840. The pair of paintings presented here are of his sister and later caretaker, Elizabeth and her husband Lewis Child (1781-1829). They are likely preparatory sketches by Jarvis who completed at least one other more detailed portrait of his sister that is conserved in collection of the Princeton University Art Museum. These works, executed with looser brushstrokes and with visible graphite outlines, serve as fascinating glimpses into the famed portraitist’s creative process, and the sensitivity with which he renders the kind dignity and soft features of his sister perhaps reflect the fondness he had for the sibling who would take care of him in the last years of his life.

Portrait of a Young Gentleman by John Wesley Jarvis (New York/Pennsylvania, 1780-1840), unsigned, oil on canvas. The painting was relined, restored and has a small scrape to one side, signs of inpainting. In the original period gilt carved wood and gesso frame. From the Swain Galleries. Stretcher 24"x29". In frame 32"x38"x3". Weight approximately 16 pds. Purchased at the Swain Galleries. A portrait painter in New York, John Wesley Jarvis was born to parents in South Shield, England, and was a nephew of theologian John Wesley. At age five, he was brought to Philadelphia where the family first settled. He was apprenticed to Edward Savage, portrait painter and engraver, and in 1801 Savage moved to New York City and brought Jarvis with him and for awhile they worked together. However, the men became estranged and Jarvis opened his own engraving business and then formed a partnership with Joseph Wood. Their business was so successful that, Jarvis later claimed they often took in more than $100 a day. Because there was little competition, Jarvis's reputation soared as a portraitist. He later said: I was the best painter because others were worse than bad, so bad was the best. The Jarvis-Wood partnership ended in 1810, and that year was one of travel for Jarvis. He went to Baltimore and Charleston in search of portrait commissions, and by 1820 was working in New Orleans. Some of his most important works were full-length military figures from the War of 1812 for the City Hall of New York.Jarvis was popular in Knickerbocker society, where he had a close friendship with Washington Irving and painted his portrait. He was known for his boisterous stories and jokes and love of food and drink. He was not a member of either the American Academy of Design of the National Academy of Design but did enter their exhibitions. Towards the end of his life, he suffered extreme poverty and a stroke in New Orleans led to his death in New York City in 1840. A portrait painter in New York, John Wesley Jarvis was born in South Shield, England, and was a nephew of theologian John Wesley. At age five, he moved to Philadelphia. Jarvis was apprenticed to Edward Savage, portrait painter and engraver. In 1801 Savage moved to New York City and brought Jarvis with him and for a time they worked together. Jarvis opened his own engraving business and then formed a partnership with Joseph Wood engraving and painting portraits. In 1810 the partnership ended and Jarvis concentrated on his painting career. This painting of Clara Sinclair - identified by the conservator on the reverse - is probably related to two portraits at Davis Museum at Wellesley College. The Davis Museum collection includes portraits of William Sinclair and Euphemia Johnston Sinclair by Jarvis. Note: At about the age of five, the precocious John Wesley Jarvis was brought from his native Northumberland to Philadelphia, where he worked with the engraver Edward Savage (1761-1817). In 1801, at the age of twenty, Jarvis moved with Savage to New York. After a brief partnership with the painter Joseph Wood (c. 1778-1830) and a sojourn in Baltimore from 1810 to 1813, for the next two decades, Jarvis became the foremost portrait painter in New York. Jarvis and fellow artist Henry Inman (1801-1846) spent the winters of 1820-21 and 1821-22 in New Orleans, when they were frequently visited by John James Audubon (1785-1851); Jarvis continued those visits alone in 1828-29, 1829-30, and 1833-34. At the beginning of the last visit in New Orleans, Jarvis suffered a strokehe had a notoriously undisciplined lifestyleand returned to New York, where he died on January 12, 1840. Jarviss much-praised naturalism, objectivity, and liveliness are beautifully exemplified in this striking portrait. The sitter, Samuel Bell, is remembered for the very fact of his marriage: his wife of 1828 was one of the immensely famous and widely celebrated eight Longer sisters of New Orleansher sister, Odile, married Edgar Degass (1834-1917) uncle, Michel Musson. Odiles and Michels daughter, Mathilde Musson, married the nephew of this present sitter, William A. Bell, who sat as a model in Degass "Portraits in a Cotton Office, New Orleans" of 1873. JOHN WESLEY JARVIS (NY, 1780-1840); "Portrait of DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York, 1824-1828", oil on canvas, unsigned, identified on label verso from The Brooklyn Museum, both as an acquisition in 1918 and as a 1951 gift from Emma L. Hyde. Housed in a magnificent gilt gesso molded frame, OS: 62 1/2" x 52 1/2", SS: 50" x 40", relined. A similar portrait of an older Clinton by Jarvis hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. DeWitt Clinton brought about the construction of the Erie Canal, also served as US Senator and Mayor of New York City.

Jarvis, John Wesley (1780-1840) Oil on canvas portrait of Dr. William Linn, 1752-1808. Relined. Dr. Linn was the pastor of Collegiate Dutch Church, New York. According to label verso, painting belonged to Mrs. Sage of Farmington, CT and is found in a book by the New York Historical Society by Harold Dickson. Painted April,1805, according to label. Showing the Revered Dr. Linn in robe and clerical collar. Minor areas of paint loss in collar, chin and background. 29 1/2" x 24 1/2" s.s., in later gilt and gesso frame to 37 1/2" x 32".
